| LGMoses01-20-07, 02:12 AM | neone seen ne feats or nethign that would work well with a sling focused fighter? I can't really think of nething other than weapon focus and I'm not sure if rapid shot will work cuz it takes a move action to load a sling. |
| Japangirl01-20-07, 03:09 AM | I don't know if it works, but Quick Draw might make Rapid Shot available to sling users as you could pull the ammunition as a free action instead of a move action. |
| Iswald01-20-07, 10:13 AM | Sling fighters aren't very practical at this point due to the move action to reload. There are no feats that will help with this like rapid reload for crossbows. To my knowledge, there are no feats or class abilities that combine well with slings. Your best option is to make your single attack count as much as possible. Skirmish damage is out since you can't move 10' and reload. Sneak attack damage can work. Oddly, if you are willing to waste two feats, you can go into Order of the Bow Initiate and use a sling instead of a bow with all of that class' abilities. You would still need weapon focus [sling] for some abilities. The magic stone spell (druid 1, cleric 1) would also help a small amount. Base damage increases to 1d6 from 1d3 for small PCs or 1d4 for medium and another +1 to attack and damage. |
| haferka01-20-07, 10:14 AM | double post. |
| haferka01-20-07, 10:19 AM | I remeber seeing a non-magic item that would be usefull. ? sling stone sleaves.. or something like that.. holds sling stones.. and lets you draw them as a free action. also, there was a "war sling" exotic weapon.. basicly a larger sling with better range increment. Spells: ?mighty blow? & greater version (races of dragon), enlarge weapon (complete scoundrel).. Feats: Power throw (for power attack with thrown weapon) PH2 had some feats (can't remember now)... Disclaimer: I dont have any books in front of me.. so i'm having a hard time remembering usefull stuff... |
| Jay_Ibero_91101-20-07, 11:21 AM | You could use the Warsling combined with Halfling Skiprocks from Races of the Wild. Better than a basic sling anyway. Sadly, Order of the Bow Initiate specifically requires Weapon Focus (Longbow/Shortbow, or composite version), so while the abilities of the class would work with a sling, you'd have to waste 2 feats on the pre-req weapon focus and rapid shot which doesn't work with slings either. Overall, the sling is not intended to be a weapon for a serious adventurer, just a low level cheap alternative the a composite bow. So if you are dead set on a sling user, and have the weapon access.... Race:Halfling Alignment: STR:14 (6)-2 DEX:15 (8)+2 CON:14 (6) INT:12 (4) WIS:10 (2) CHA:10 (2) Lvl1(Ranger)Point Blank Shot, Track Lvl2(Ranger)Rapid Shot Lvl3(Fighter)Precise Shot, Exotic Weapon Proficiency(Skiprock) Lvl4(Fighter)Exotic Weapon Proficiency(Warsling), +1 DEX Lvl5(Fighter) Lvl6(Fighter)Weapon Focus(Warsling), Weapon Focus(Composite Longbow) Lvl7(Order of the Bow Initiate) Lvl8(Order of the Bow Initiate)+1 DEX Lvl9(Order of the Bow Initiate)Weapon Specialization(Warsling) Lvl10(Order of the Bow Initiate) Lvl11(Order of the Bow Initiate) Lvl12(Order of the Bow Initiate)Improved Critical(Warsling), +1 DEX Lvl13(Order of the Bow Initiate) Lvl14(Order of the Bow Initiate) Lvl15(Order of the Bow Initiate)Feat Fastest way to get all the pre-requisites on top of the feats for the weapons you want to use. And when you encounter things immune to crits, you CAN rapidshot with the skiprocks, even without quickdraw because they are treated as ammunition. Despite the wasted feats, this could be an interesting build to play...just be aware of the move action required to reload...that's the biggest annoyance with that weapon. |
| LGMoses01-20-07, 01:06 PM | see, the main thing I was concerned on was table variance concerning rapid shot working with the sling. If it takes a move action to reload it then can you rapid shot it? It has me a little worried is all. Other than that, yeah, I was thinking two lvls ranger then str8 fighter if I didn't just skip ranger to begn with. |

| UMiskatonic01-22-07, 06:06 PM | If you are committed to sling fighter, then I'd take the run feat, cuz you'll need it. I wish it were otherwise, but it's a VERY weak way to fight, mechanically. If you're willing to -throw- rocks at people, then we're talking. Take TWF, GTWF, point blank, precise, rapid shot, W. Focus (rock), W. Spec (rock) and you'll get by. Brutal Throw and Power Throw are interesting as well, and should be taken if you have a low Dex. Master Thrower is really the direction you'll want to go in. |

Otherwise all the TWF feats are useless because you can only have a rock in each hand at a time, and drawing more is a move action. |

| paigeoliver01-22-07, 11:52 PM | I say make a character who THROWS rocks and use the rules and mechanics for that and just make the bit about using a sling as flavor only. You know make him a miniature that has a sling and all, but when it comes down to it you just throw the rocks by hand. |
| Mithreinmaethor01-22-07, 11:59 PM | Well why worry about rapid shot with the sling. If you have EWP Skip rock you get basically 2 attacks with it when you throw it. Read its description. You would also need the EWP Warsling. But a medium creature with one of them can do some nice damage. But you have to get access to them also. They are not items you can normally purchase. |
| UMiskatonic01-23-07, 11:24 AM | Because an 11th level fighter with the right feats can throw seven rocks a round, eight with haste. Using a sling, that fighter will only get one attack. And Japan Girl, I skipped Quick Draw because Master throwers get it for free. |
| LGMoses01-23-07, 03:10 PM | Also, I think I could throw other things with little penalty. Flasks of oil for instance. Nething small and low on weight. |
| Mithreinmaethor01-23-07, 04:43 PM | Yeah slingers get screwed. Write in and see if they will answer it in a FAQ or something. But with Quickdraw and just throwing them you will be fine. You just lose 35 ft of range increment (15 for rock and 50 for warsling) But it is going to get expensive for you. Since they are considered ammunition they are destroyed when you hit. And at 3 gps each rock. Its gonna add up. Not to mention they are heavy to carry around. |

| kenobi6501-23-07, 05:55 PM | Also, I think I could throw other things with little penalty. Flasks of oil for instance. Nething small and low on weight. "Low on weight" is going to be relative. Oil flasks, alchemists' oil, acid, etc. all weigh 1 pound each. Tanglefoot bags weigh 4 pounds. It sounds like you're playing a high-Str character (which is why you like the sling), but carrying a significant amount of this "ammo" is gonna be heavy. |

| clannagh01-23-07, 10:40 PM | if you have spare feats far shot is a good one with a sling .. it only improves by 50% as sling is a projectile weapon but still 75' is way better than 50' range increment |

Throwing holywater 40' kicks ass. |
| thorinXXX01-30-07, 03:18 PM | Honestly, the best feat for a slig user is Weapon Proficiency(longbow). |
