Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not clear on how one would go about buying a Wand of Cure Light Wounds. I've played two adventures and have the money, but (I'm assuming) not the access.

I read somewhere that you need to join an organization that lets you buy one. If that is true, is it the only way, and if so - how do I find such an organization? I've read through many of the Verbobonc orgs (which is where I'm from and where I adventured) and didn't see anything along those lines.

There used to be fairly frequent metaorg access to Wand of CLW. Magic Item access is no longer available through metaorgs, so you will need to gain access through an AR. Unless something really odd happens, that's how you should plan on buying your wand. That might be your next mod, or it might not be one for a while. I have one character with multiple long term access, and another with no access after 20 TUs.

Actually, you'd need to either join an organization that gives you access, or get access from one of your ARs. See pages 17 and 18 of the LGCS for further details.

Edit: correction, magic items can't be gained from metaorgs anymore.

Thanks for the information.

Your comment about "long term access" makes me suspect the length of time you have to buy the item might vary by AR. Is that the case? If access isn't permanent, then I should probably set some money aside in case I hit the right adventure to buy a wand.

Something else that occurred to me about such a wand. If I (as a cleric) buy one and then use most of it up on other people, is there any method of compensation?

I don't think players can give other players gold, so why would a (non-good) cleric spend his gold to heal others? Do players usually buy their own wands for healers to use on them, or am I wrong about transfering cash?

Conceivably, you could get "Core" or "Regional" access to one, though I don't think I've ever gotten access to one that wasn't "Adventure."

Over the long run, access to that wand is pretty common, because the writers and Triads realize how important it is...but, as has been noted, that doesn't guarantee that you'll find one, just due to the vagaries of which modules you play.

Technically, you shouldn't have to set money aside. Even at APL 2, you should be getting 450gp in most modules (assuming you reach the cap on GP), and "Adventure" access lets you buy the item after that adventure, and the following 3.

Since a wand of CLW only costs 750 gp, even if you have 0 gp at the moment, you should have no problem scraping up the 750gp to buy one before you lose access.

No, you're not wrong about transferring cash. Other players / PCs can't compensate you in any way for using up consumables.

Why would a non-good cleric spend his gold to heal others? Because those others might help keep that cleric alive, as well. "Don't want to heal me, cleric? Then, I don't think I want to protect you from that monster that's trying to eat you." While you're directly healing that one PC with your consumable item, you're fundamentally making sure that the party (and that includes you) survives...and it's not like you won't have other PCs using up their consumables, as well.

That said, I've, quite often, seen non-clerics with wands of CLW, which they've bought specifically so that they're helping to contribute to the party healing.

Ah ok. That's the bit of information I was missing. :)

That's too bad about impossibility of consumables compensation though. It could lead to discord and hard feelings brought about only because of the peculiar (though perhaps necessary) rules.

Part of the role of a cleric is healing party members, and most players assume that you're going to do that. If you're playing a cleric who's not willing to do so, then you should tell the other players up front, so they're not expecting it of you.

And, as I said, it's not like other party members aren't spending their money on stuff to aid the party...wizards buying wands of Magic Missile, fighters buying alchemist's fire, etc.

At higher levels, it's reasonable for everyone to have a decent stock of expendable items, even if they need another PC to activate them. High-level fighters who carry no scrolls or potions "because I can't use scrolls and it's cheaper for the casters to buy scrolls than for me to buy potions", and then expect the cleric to have scrolls of every restorative spell in the game available when needed, are not really playing as part of a team.

Most people I've met buy wands of CLW at the earliest opportunity, regardless of whether the PC can use them. If they can't use them, they hand them out to the PCs who can. Charges from the wands are usually split among the party, sometimes weighted by who has the most wand charges left (people with long-term access to the wands also tend to be a bit more generous). I've also been on tables where the default seems to be that people get healed using their own expendables, especially if the damage was very obviously avoidable. (For example, if my wild mage pokes the ancient evil artifact and it zaps her for 50 damage, then I would consider it unfair to ask the other PCs to contribute to healing in most cases.)

I don't know how much I am allowed to say about mods.

But there is a core mod Year 5 that allows permanent access to a Wand CLW. That means any time you play a core mod you can buy a Wand CLW.

Can't tell you which one I think or give hints. (Maybe one of the senior members here know how far they can go)

Well, the name of the scenario is similar to a very famous Led Zepplin song and features a group devoted to a God whose name starts with the same letter as both the song and scenario.

Easy to work out when you've played it, a tiny hint if you haven't.

Sorry Kenobi65

But I assume you are talking to Haro. Or was it wrong to even mention that it is in a core mod year 5???

New to this, and it is kinda of an unwritten rule, so hard to judge for oneself.

It seems really simple. Don't comment on what access might be found in what mods.

Yep, that's fair enough. A combination of tiredness and frustration at a couple of my PCs not ever getting access to consumables that I'd LIKE to purchase for party benefit led to the err, hint.

Do kids these days even know who Led Zepplin are? ;-)

I've seen Core access, regional access, and adventure access. It is not so uncommon.
As to costs: consumables are mucho spending resources.
I have hardly ever been compensated for consumables.
You expect others to invest too, though.
My char constantly carries stuff around: scrolls, potions, wands, tanglefoot bags and smokesticks...
And it can be useful. I can't tell the times my char came up with a scroll of knock when the wizard didn't have one. And during one GenCon UK special my char spent 3000 gp on scrolls of spider climb/invis, a factor that helped in giving our table - afaik - the only complete victory - killed/captured everyone with no casualties (well, the paladin got shot into the negatives, but that was fair, he was the distraction).

You might be surprised. I know I'm surprised at the number of teenagers I see wearing t-shirts for bands from the 60s and 70s.

Well I'm a fan of LZ and LG and I can't figure it out. So in my case he didn't go over the line. :D

We're trying to get a local Year 5 fire sale in our game day anyway so it should still work out.

Even if you aren't good, you're a hero that operates as part of a group in LG. Think about it.

I normally don't spend a lot on consumables because I tend to play mostly tweaked melee characters** who rarely take damage. But I also have a halfling swashbuckler who isn't nearly as effective as my other characters, so I bought a cure light wounds wand for him as soon as I found one.

**7th level Mounted halfing archer, hasn't been below half hit points since 4th level and makes it through most modules without ever even being hit.

Whip marshall, whom the bad guys usually tend to ignore since I am running around tripping and disarming from behind people rather than actually doing damage.

Glass cannon calvalry marshall, who one hits most enemies, this one takes more damage than any of my characters though, but she keeps stocked up on potions of cure light. This one alternates between never being hit the whole module or being ripped to shreds quickly.

My cleric simply told everyone in the local group .. if you dont have your own wand i will give you minimal heals to stay alive and thats it.

Characters should buy a CLW at the earliest opportunity even if they cannot use it.

Bare in mind that clerics, rangers, druids, bards, paladins, rogues with UMD and presumably marshalls favored souls and a couple of other classes can all use wands even if your character cannot.

has anyone got access to anything better on a regular basis? i mean, our group had heaps of healing at level 2... most of the classes could use a clw wand... but now at lvl 7... clw is not really cutting it :/ cure moderates wand access anyone?
Iswald

It depends upon how you are using your wands. If you just use them out of combat, wands of lesser vigor are the most cost effective method. In combat, healing clerics are better. I don't think I'd buy a wand of cure moderate, given the opportunity.

When I was your age, back in the 70s and early 80s, there weren't a lot of teenagers who were particularly conversant in early rock and roll (from the 50s and early 60s) -- not too many teenagers thought that Buddy Holly, or Chuck Berry, or Roy Orbison (roughly equivalent, as far as "how long ago they're from") were cool.

Then again, when I was growing up, disco and polyester were cool, so there's absolutely no accounting for taste. :D
