| Rerednaw04-18-07, 07:40 PM | My wizard is 7th and will be 8th after the next mod. I may take this opportunity to retrain into Craft Wondrous Item. The dilemma: which feat to drop. He's a human summoner/battlefield controller. His base int at 8th will be 20. Here's my feat list: Spell Focus: Conjuration Augment Summoning Rapid Spell Sculpt Spell Metamagic School Focus: Conjuration Basically he'd be selling just about everything he has (mostly scrolls) have enough cash for a +6 headband. Right now he has a lesser metamagic extend 1/day, a H^3, and a Wand of MM (1st) with about 30 charges. The rest are spells or consumables. Alternatively he could go for a +4 instead and make a few other items like a couple of POP2, (do not have access to POP1) and a B^3. Opinions? Or should I just suck it up and wait until 9th? |

Well you'll pay 4TUs and 800gp to not be able to use MSF to it's fullest for an entire level. Assuming that you will be keeping craft wonderous from now on I would simply wait until 9th level. The following exception to that advice: if your play opportunities are such that this year you won't make 9th and will have TUs left over for crafting, then perhaps doing so is worthwhile. It's a slight chance there, but figured I'd mention it. Otherwise I'd wait until 9th and then use those 4TUs that you saved to craft. I'd keep on being able to sculpt evard's, blast of flame and solid fog to your heart's content all the way through 8th level. -James NB: The only feats you could replace would be MSF or Sculpt. |
| jstorrie04-18-07, 10:38 PM | Suck it up and wait until 9th. You've already invested in your consumables and you already have a solid set of feats which you should not tamper with. Headband +6 is not a good purchase for you at this point if you have to liquidate everything else to get it. Remember, higher-quality items give diminishing returns. Stick with what you've got and take CWI at 9. |
| Rerednaw04-19-07, 12:58 PM | Yah my wiz is in Red Hand of TU-siphoning Doom. He does have enough TU's for crafting this year and he won't hit 9th until after part 5. It's a been a dicey run so far, which is why I was debating on doing this. |

I went through a similar decision recently, and opted to wait for a crafting feat until I had the TUs to spend. I'd wait for 9th, take it then, and then craft in year 8. Hold your cash until then. I would say to dump Sculpt Spell. While it's "nice", it's the only one of your feats that isn't tuned to your primary purpose (casting summoning spells). In addition, that would free up your 9th level feat for that nice PHB2 feat that allows you to "spin" a secondary buff into your summonings at a 1-level cost, meaning that you could (with the MSF) launch an Augmented, Bull's Strengthed level 4 summon in the space of the first standard action of combat, or else launch a "free" spell in the span of a standard 5th level summon when you hit level 9. If you happen to find a Lesser Rod of Sculpt Spell, you'll be just as happy as if you had the feat; most of the Conjurations you're working with are 3rd level or less, right? I also suggest just buying the +4 item for now; at a 24 Int, you're getting all the bonus spells you'd get anyways, and you can always upgrade it to +6 later on (say, level 12-13ish). |
| Sieylianna04-20-07, 06:23 PM | You really don't need a +6 headband at 8th level. I wouldn't sink all my wealth into one item because you may cripple yourself elsewhere. Then you're more likely to die and if you die, you're really hosed because there is a good chance you have to sell the headband for a raise. I'd wait until 9th level to take CWI (and possibly even take it with your wizard bonus feat at 10th). Ed |
| Timlagor04-20-07, 10:30 PM | If you had 22Int and were focussed on save-based spells then the HEadband +6 might well be worth it now; not with your current focus though. |

How does a human get a 22 int before any buffs or items at level 8? :) Howie23: ====== As I said I have TU's on top of what I need for Red Hand, so I could could craft. Only 5 TU's but that's enough for all the wealth he has. JamesMaissen: ========== Forgot Blast of Flame was a Conjuration Spell. Only 7d6/8d6 which is only good for mook nuking but still nice. I usually drop a battlefield control spell on mooks though. We have 4 soft tanks in the party for damage dealing (Monkx/clr1, roguex/ftr1, centaur, ftr/wiz/spellsword). If I take any other spells though it's pretty pricey, without a Blessed Book the scroll and scribing costs are 750 gp each spell. And without the headband I only have 2-4th level slots anyway. Everyone: ======= Thanks for all the advice...got a bit of thinking to do. Decisions, decisions... |
