I would say that Hexblade would be the one I have see the least of. I have only know two people that have taken levels in Hexblade. One of those happens to be a Marshall/Favored Soul/Hexblade of Pholtus. I always get a kick out of him cursing people in the name of Pholtus! :D

As for other things I don't see much of:
Scout
Monk
Favored Soul
Swashbuckler

I've seen exactly one each of Hexblade and Monk. I've seen several Scouts and Favored Souls (my wife plays one of each), and just recently sat at at table with *two* Swashbucklers (the first two I've ever seen, though).

do you actually have to be a monk, or can haveing 2 lvls of it count. as in, to dip classes count?

I'm counting even dips, though the one monk I've seen was a pure monk.

lol in that case, i single handedly, through 2 characters, cover monk, hexblade, ranger, fighter, barbarian, bloodhound, wizard, geometer, child of the night, shadowcaster, nocturnmancer, master of shadow.

But, alas, dear, you're way down on the other side of the planet, so my odds of seeing you at one of my tables are not so hot.

though seeing me at the table would be so hot ;)

who knows, one or other of us might end up near one or other of us.

anyone seen a dark hunter? death attack with only 5 lvls investment, i rather thought that would apeal to some of the newer players.

Edit: Hey, I didn't know that would end up as a smiley! Coolio!

who knows, one or other of us might end up near one or other of us.

Come up to the States for GenCon or Origins, then. I had a couple of Aussies at my Living Arcanis table at Origins last summer, and they were great. (One of my best gaming buddies is an Aussie, for that matter...but he's been transplanted to Salt Lake City.)

I'd love to visit Australia, but even though my wife is a big-time gamer, I can't see her being willing to go down there to play D&D. :D

i don't think monks are that rare .. i know of several proposed tatoo monk builds

generally though the monks i have met have been occasional play secondaries

I only know one person playing a monk as a primary

There was a whole group (4 or 5 players) who were simultaneously running a bunch of 6 CON gray elves they intended to have go Dark Hunter. They were hoping to get access to some feat to let them replace INT for CON for HPs, and I think most of them abandoned their characters when they learned they just weren't going to get that access. Sadly, one or two of those characters might still be adventuring.

I'm generally opposed to targeting PCs at a table, but I think those one are just too cheezy to live... (hmm... in type font, here, the line just didn't have that cheezy 70s metal ring to it)

Meanwhile -- Classes? Let me think. I've got a Hexblade (1-level dip, soon headed for 3-levels) as does one of my friends (though his PC's only 2nd or 3rd level). Our whole playgroup runs bards (among our characters). I think that, in the Shield Lands, I've seen every base class represented multiple times, though monks and favored souls are perhaps rarer than the rest.

Yup...I've DMed in the car (though I made one of the players drive), so it could work. Biggest issue is getting seats together, and not freaking out the other passengers when you start talking about killing things and fireballs. Best pray you don't have the Sky Marshall riding on that flight.

So, last night, my lovely bride and I were talking, and I mentioned this silly thread in passing.

She says, "I think it'd be fun to go play D&D in Australia."

So, there we are! :D

I believe they all result from special access granted at last year's Gen Con Core Special.

Yeah, I am thinking that monk & hexblade are the PCs I see the least of.

In my main group we have a monk(going enlightened fist) and 3 hexblades. Not all of them are usually there at the same time, but we've actually once had a table where everyone had a 14+ Charisma.

Looked something like this:
Monk 2/Sorc 1/Pal 1
Barbarian 1/Hexblade 2
Sorc 5
Hexblade 5
Dwarf Cleric 3
Bard 5

Didn't go particularly well in the final combat, I got critted on round 1 and dropped, the two Hexblades both failed their will saves. As we were the front line, that wasn't good.

We barely managed to run for our lives.

Monk and Hexblade sound about right.

I know precisely 3 monks... 2 lament their choice, one is an extremely odd build.

Hexblade is just underpowered period.

Monk is one of those classes that you need to exploit ruthlessly. I can't tell you how many low level Monks I've seen wandering around without the following:
Oil of Shillelagh - what, doing 2d6+1+Str damage as part of a flurry with a Quarterstaff doesn't interest you? And the thing is 50 gp.

Reach Weapon - the class gives combat reflexes, but no proficiency in a reach weapon. But it doesn't matter if you punch or kick someone. So hold a Spiked Chain - trip attacks are touch attacks, you'll still hit people and occasionally trip 'em.

Light Armor - at low levels, you really just lose flurry and a lot of the time, you don't want flurry as that means you're planning on standing right next to someone.

No Improved Grapple - even if you take Stunning Fist as your bonus feat, a 1st level Monk meets all the prereqs for Improved Grapple. Improved Grapple is one of the more powerful 1st level feats you can have - it destroys combats when it works.

And a starting strength of 16+. If you don't take it, you'll regret it. It just fuels so many things for a Monk. Monks are light infantry who hope to negate the monster's ability to attack back, not go toe to toe for more than a round.

---

Hexblade's a different story - it isn't too hard to make work as a party face who happens to be the frontliner of the party and cast a spell here and there. The problem here is that many Hexblades think they can justify a starting charisma higher than 14 without any dips into other classes. It isn't a powerhouse class, but it can be fun to play.

Barbarian 1, Fighter 1-2, Outcast Champion 2-5, Marshal 1-3, and Rogue 1-3 can all make a Hexblade a lot more effective(Rogue because it gives so many skill points to spend on Charisma skills)

Oh.... Outcast Champion... Gotcha. I saw the "O" and the "C" and thought that you were writing up my character:

Barbarian 1/Fighter 2/Occult Slayer 5/Rogue 2/Hexblade 1

If you include prestige classes, there are some for which there are no examples in the database (Daggerspell Shaper, for instance).

Funny, I'm seriously thinking of taking that class for my DM challenge wildshaping druid.

The idea of running around with bandoliers of daggers for every occasion, and being able to keep the dagger powers in wildshape modes, appeals greatly.

Will require a HD loss for wildshape to take a level of rogue or the like for Sneak Attack, though. <sigh>
