| CdrcJsn08-02-07, 03:11 AM | I had my greyhawk character set for the new campaign, or so I thought. Then I saw the campaign rules, and with all the access permitted, I simply can't make up my mind. So what are people thinking of playing? I'll probably choose something that is unpopular just to be different :P A one line description of your character is preferred: Race and Role (using Warhorn character archetypes - Tank, Light Infantry, Archer, Arcane Caster, Artillery, Summoner, Divine Caster, Medic/Support, Rogue, Generalist) You can give a short description of your exact build if you want afterwards. I'll compile a list once people start replying. Example: Gnome Generalist Ranger1/Bard4/Trapsmith5/SublimeChord5 Using alternate class feature for Ranger to get Trapfinding and use Trapsmith spellcasting to qualify for Sublime Chord. Use Invisibility and Swift Invisibility from Bard spells to run around combat unseen, setting up traps. |
| CdrcJsn08-02-07, 03:11 AM | I won't be including those who gave multiple answers since you can only have one GR character. Check back in when you've made up your mind (or discovered whether in fact you do have a kobold card). Also, those that didn't answer using the Warhorn Archetypes will be ignored if I can't figure out your role from the description (warmage is pretty much artillery, but I won't hazzard a guess on the more esoteric builds). I'm assuming that those using Outcast Champion but didn't specify a race is using half-elf and not hurting themselves by going half-orc. Human 4 Kobold 3 Elf 2 Half-elf 2 Gnome 1 Halfling 1 Dwarf Half-orc Tank 3 Arcane Caster 3 (1) Medic/Support 3 Artillery 2 (1) Divine Caster 1 (1) Rogue 1 (1) Light Infantry Archer Summoner Generalist * ( ) indicates number with Trapfinding ability or alternate means to handle traps Data used from: Franco Un-American, Donald Cannith, CrystalBlue, Genghis Cohen, RedknightofKet, Banor, Shieldhart, Bitznarf, Tonus, Umbral Kaitou, Todd Morgan, Dademan, Mad Monkey |
| Franco Un-American08-02-07, 04:27 AM | Human Medic/Support Cleric 6/Radiant Servant of Pelor 9 Using Spontaneous Domain Casting to gain constant empower healing for my cast spells. Secondarily is a decent undead turner, especially when you get into RSoP; ditching Sun granted power to gain spontaneous rejuvenation, considering I get it back anyway. |
| Timlagor08-02-07, 04:49 AM | I was going to make a Healer... but there's nothing special for the Healer in there and someone local stole my thunder by making one a couple of months ago. The Cleric PHB2 Domain option also puts HEalers even further behind the Clerics. ..I might still play a Healer as a follower of St.Cuthbert though ..those guys surely need plenty of healing ;) |
| Banor08-02-07, 04:54 AM | Human (Baklunish) Arcane Caster Necromancer 6/Nightmare Spinner 5/Fate Spinner 4. Will be tossing debuffs and Death effect to living targets and controlling the dead ones :) |
| RedKnightofKet08-02-07, 07:04 AM | Human (Flan?) Tank Barb 1/Fighter 6/Pious Templar of Zagyg 8 Will be a bull-rushing monstrosity who calls himself "Captain Greyhawk!" everytime he goes in for the kill (think Robot Chicken sketch where Ted Turner thinks he is Captain Planet, and that's me) :D |
| Genghis Cohen08-02-07, 07:21 AM | Touv Cleric (future Radiant Servant) of Nola with Augment Healing and Divine Ward, a 12 int to keep Diplomacy maxed out, and membership in the Cartographers Guild. |
| CrystalBlue08-02-07, 08:20 AM | Yappy little support healer Kobold Cleric 5/Singer of Concordance 10 Mmmm....very tasty yummness. |
| Donald_Cannith08-02-07, 08:37 AM | Gnome Politician/merchant/clergyman Rogue1/Cleric 4/ divine Prankster 10 |
| Lupo08-02-07, 09:08 AM | if i don't get a kobold card it will be most likely a grey elven rogue 1/wiz 1-5/rogue 2/unseen seer 1/arcane trickster for the rest, dual wand wielder ;) with a kobold card i might be tempted to do a bard 6/lyrik thaumaturge 1-4/sublime chord 1-5, i am still looking for a most silly boy group member to hijack the name and make fun of it, or maybe just a name from the muppet show, let's call him gonzo :P and have an affiliation for chicken. anyway i think to CONCENTRATE special options with one character might be suboptimal - the character cannot take them ALL, so one character for greyhawk ruins and one kobold for other adventures. and there are plenty of options to play low to mid characters ;) and one of the regions i regularly play has already announced a "positive" or at least a "non-negative" attitude towards kobolds :D ciao martin m. |
| rutrow42408-02-07, 09:39 AM | If I get a kobold card, then a kobold light infantry build w/ wings and substitution levels; otherwise, a metamagic sorcerer build. |
| Mommy was an Orc08-02-07, 09:43 AM | There are a few choices - none of which fit easily into a given Warhorn slot, even the Divine Caster for the Cleric of Boccob: Divine Caster(kind of) Cleric of Boccob who is looking for a few particular common PrC accesses. The Spontaneous Domain Casting saved me a feat, even if I take Spontaneous Healer. What's more, I give up the Trickery Domain power for the spontaneous Restorations. This seems the most likely as other people are interested in the Trapfinding and BDF slots. Rogue: Rogue 3/Fighter 1/Wizard 2/Unseen Seer 8/Spellsword 1 - either TWF or Reach Weapon. Penetrating Strike alternate class feature. There's probably some variation that involves Bard 1, Trapsmith 1, and Sublime Chord 1 for spell craziness, but I doubt I'd do that. Light Infantry/Tank Ranger 3/Marshal 1/Barbarian 1/Wildrunner 10 - charisma based tank with lots of specials. |
| UMiskatonic08-02-07, 09:47 AM | I'm going to build a rogue knife thrower. I haven't decided whether or not that means daring outlaw, or master thrower. But, I don't have to know right now. |
| Shieldhart9108-02-07, 09:58 AM | Kobold Sorcerer that takes racial substitution levels in Dragonblood Sorcerer, with the Gold Dragon being the parent. Ultimate buffing lizard! WAHHH! |
| Hand_OF_Mystra08-02-07, 10:09 AM | I may revise these: a want a kobold arms dealer: a crafting sorcerer with bard and /or rogue mixed in. Skill points in merchant-type skills (profession(merchant), bluff, sense motive, diplomacy, appraise) He will sell magic items to anyone. I recently heard a book review about a RL guy who sells weapons to both sides of a conflict and then got paid to airlift in relief supplies - how much more neutral can you get? This guy is motivated by money - I would be motivated by roleplay I was thinking of a gnome sorcerer/rogue (alternate ability)/arcane trickster/trapsmith (I need to get Dungeonscape to come up with a build). This guy is a technician with sneak attack damage on anything. The metamagic sorcerer (using the alternate class ability) is enticing. Some kind of urban ranger (using the ranger alternate class ability). I have not come up with builds yet, but I would love to hear any feedback (or links to builds in these directions). Since there are four areas with different ARs, in the first greyhawk adventure; I was thinking of starting a couple of characters. It will be fun to edit this as I get closer. |
| bitznarf08-02-07, 11:10 AM | Brother Cattleprod of Reasoned Discussion (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12533996&postcount=33) Knight 3/Marshal2/Hexblade3/Monk2/Outcast Champion 5 (though not in that order) If you can't tell from the build stub, this, is a tank. With a reach weapon and Bulwark of Defence this guy will be able to prevent most opponents from moving past him, letting those who do more damage do their thing. And if they do end up hurting someone else, bring on the pain with Outcast Champion's Avenging Strike. Couple that with the ability to take AoOs when charged or grappled, incredible saves, evasion and mettle and you have one tough nut to crack. His biggest challenge will probably be other big melee opponents, like the ones I heard about in City of Brass I think it was. "Did I tell you that you could leave? No. Now come back here and we can talk about this." *whump* "Are you done yet? No?" *whump* "How about now?" *whump* Not sure how a piercing/slashing weapon goes *whump* it just does. |
| _metz_08-02-07, 12:01 PM | I always end up making the character that no-one else wants to take! So I will probably end up with a Cleric or a BDF. It's still undecided with the group I am gaming with. |
| ToddMorgan08-02-07, 12:02 PM | Grey Elf Warmage. Either going the Point Blank shot feat progression with ecclectic learning, or Fey Heritage progression without it. |
| Umbra_Kaitou08-02-07, 12:31 PM | Like the person above, coincidentally enough Grey Elf Warmage/Spellwarp Sniper (though i guess with the level of rogue needed to get in, i'll be taking an XP hit x_x) |
| Tonus08-02-07, 12:38 PM | Kobold Beguiler. What does it matter if people don't like kobolds when nobody knows you are one? |
| gomeztoo08-02-07, 12:45 PM | I was originally thinking of a Touv fighter type (posisbly knight). However, a friend and I thought it may eb fun to make a sibling pair where one worshipped Pholtus and the other St. Cuthbert. Last I heared, he was going for a Pholtan paladin. The Character I am trying to build now is a Cleric of St. Cuthbert, a Star, member of the church and the Nightwatchmen. He/she is likely an androgynous half-elf, making him/her a half-sibling of the paladin. I am not yet sure whether it is a good idea to make a rogue/cleric, so I can go for Shadowbane Stalker, or to stick with cleric and go fro Church Inquisitor (for which it will be hard to meet the specific requirements). |
| dademan08-02-07, 12:58 PM | Halfling Rogue. Rogue7/Fighter2/NightsongEnforcer6(I have access) thats if I survive  I think its fairly obvious. Though if I could redue my levels, (rouge1/fght2), I think I would get rid of the fighter levels. But oh well. |
| delewobmesid08-02-07, 02:17 PM | Probably two characters (they only a greyhawk ruin AR before second level) Cleric of St Cutberth 1/Palidan 14 (smite away) Kobold Rogue 3/Bard 2/Trapsmith 5/sublime cord (if I get the card) |
| nicklaw1708-02-07, 02:23 PM | "Did I tell you that you could leave? No. Now come back here and we can talk about this." *whump* "Are you done yet? No?" *whump* "How about now?" *whump* Not sure how a piercing/slashing weapon goes *whump* it just does. Actually, it's just piercing - despite EVERY illustration I've ever seen showing it being used as a slashing weapon. ;) Random Card Gods permitting, I'll be running a Kobold Druid for Ruins, probably going with both alt. druid abilities opened up. |
| bitznarf08-02-07, 02:51 PM | Actually, it's just piercing - despite EVERY illustration I've ever seen showing it being used as a slashing weapon. The weapon description in Races of Stone does call it 'slashing or piercing', the same as a halberd. Being just a big halberd and all. |
| nicklaw1708-02-07, 03:27 PM | The weapon description in Races of Stone does call it 'slashing or piercing', the same as a halberd. Being just a big halberd and all. Yeah, I didn't see that you'd switched from Spiked Chain to Warpike on the revision. |
| Istaran08-02-07, 03:39 PM | Definitely a kobold (I did get the card already). I'm thinking kobold dragonblood cleric w/ trickery and dragon domains, taking domain spontaneity for trickery. Otherwise, maybe a kobold rogue w/ kobold foe strike. (Oh, how the vec-gnomes will suffer my lizardly wrath) |
| Pint_Glass_Crusader08-02-07, 04:46 PM | If I get my card! "Rat-Dragon" Light Infantry/Support [Kobold Marshal/Rogue with "Swarm-Fighting" & "Leadership" for a "Swarm-Fighting" Kobold Cohort; probably a Rogue/something] If no card... High Elf Light Infantry/Divine Caster [High Elf Marshal/Paladin/Divine Crusader of Bahamut] I haven't really tried a Marshal yet, so I'm looking forward to it! :) |
| jstorrie08-02-07, 04:47 PM | Depends on what I see for alternate class features in Cityscape/Dungeonscape, which I don't have yet. |
| magebeast08-02-07, 05:00 PM | Got my card today and no Kobold. If one of my friends gets a card and doesn't want to use it, I'll be making a kobold cleric because I like the Singer of Concordance PrC. Travel/Magic domains, picking up Dragon as my bonus domain later on, simply because having Dragon Ally in my back pocket at high levels seems useful. I'll be taking the cleric alternate class feature so that I can spontaneously convert my prepared spells into Travel spells. CWI at 3rd so I can (hopefully I'll get access) pump out some pearls level 1 and keep up longstrider all day so that wearing fullplate I'll still move at 30. |
| TWG_Prometheus08-02-07, 05:23 PM | I need to check Dungeonscape just in case I see something that's truly worth buying the book for. Aside from that, I'm leaning toward a Dark Companion Hexblade since I think that finally pushes the class toward viability. It's a virtual +2 Attack and +2 Saving Throw DC, plus your party benefits! Almost brings the Hexblade into power-level parity with a straight Barbarian. But not quite... |
| Mad Monkey08-02-07, 05:40 PM | Half-elf tank/support fighter paladin 2/cleric 1/marshal 2/outcast champion 5/pious templar X of Heironeous. The build focuses on charisma synergy. It will be a decent sword and board fighter with some extras coming from the cleric, marshal and outcast champion levels. |

Almost brings the Hexblade into power-level parity with a straight Barbarian. But not quite... Yeah, except unfortunately, it doesn't really scale - gives people a reason to take 1 more level of Hexblade. It doesn't give them a reason to go further than that. WotC really should have offered a substitution for the mostly useless Hexblade feats. It would have been a natural place to bump up the class without needing to rewrite everything. |
| Zarron08-02-07, 07:44 PM | I'm playing my first LG Module this Sunday with a Neutral Halfling Cleric of Celestian. I've been looking at what I want to play for Ruins (if I have time to play). I'm debating between a Marshall (the downside being, I don't own the Miniature's Handbook) or a Beguiler (the upside being, I DO own the PHB II). |
| TWG_Prometheus08-03-07, 12:03 PM | Yeah, except unfortunately, it doesn't really scale - gives people a reason to take 1 more level of Hexblade. It doesn't give them a reason to go further than that. WotC really should have offered a substitution for the mostly useless Hexblade feats. It would have been a natural place to bump up the class without needing to rewrite everything. I'd consider continuing in Hexblade anyway, since they have some pretty cool spells at the top end, and continued Hexblade progression is more or less necessary if you want the Curse to be at all relevant. Dark Companion is the thing I'd need to push that Curse DC (and my attacks) from not being effective to maybe actually working regularly. With Ability Focus(Hexblade Curse) and a base 14 Charisma, the curse would be DC 10 + 1/2 level + 2 Ability Focus + 2 Base Charisma + X Charisma enhancements...roughly DC 18 at level 6 I bet, or DC 20 if you factor in the effect of the Dark Companion on your DC instead of on their saves for easier comparisons. That's roughly the same as a Grey Elf Wizard would be getting on their Save-or-Die spells at the same level if they had 20 base Int, so I think I have to respect it. Giving the whole party an effective (stacking) +2 to their attacks and +2 spell/ability DCs as well just makes it yummy. Oddly, a Dark Companion Hexblade would frequently find themselves wanting to delay until right AFTER the enemy moves in order to put the Companion next to them for as many PC turns as possible. Or the party could wait until the Hexblade goes, like many parties do sometimes for Haste. I'd be thinking Wood Elf Hexblade with 14 Charisma and Ability Focus(Hexblade Curse) with the whole rest of the build dumped into two-handed weapon fighting. Alternately, I could just ditch Hexblade after level 4, skip the Ability Focus feat and move towards getting Melee Weapon Mastery by level 9...possibly with some Ranger levels after after Fighter 4. I definitely agree about the Hexblade feats though. Not even the Hexblade's familiar is that worthless. |
| CdrcJsn08-05-07, 06:27 PM | Looks like we're light on Rogue types so far...I hope there aren't any traps in the ruins. Oh wait... |
| happosaai08-05-07, 08:27 PM | Human Light Infantry Scout 4/Ranger 2/Dervish 9 Usinf Swift Hunter feat to combine ranger/scout for better skirmish/favored enemy and use skirmish on FE. High mobility due to scout at low and dervish at high. Might use the alt class feature for ranger trapfinding. |
| ornsjach08-05-07, 09:13 PM | (tank/support/Battle field leader) CG half-elf Marshal2/Fighter2/Barbarian1/Outcast Champion5/Holy Liberator5 |
| Mommy was an Orc08-05-07, 10:46 PM | Looks like we're light on Rogue types so far...I hope there aren't any traps in the ruins. Oh wait... Well, who we're playing doesn't necessarily represent our parties - if anything, in my group of about 12, there are about 5 people wanting to play an Unseen Seer or Rogue/Swashbuckler of some kind... |
| Pint_Glass_Crusader08-06-07, 03:03 AM | Looks like we're light on Rogue types so far...I hope there aren't any traps in the ruins. Don't forget the alternate class abilities... Ranger and Barbarian have an effective (maybe not as effective as Rogue) way to deal with most traps. One of my group is planning a "Trap-Killer" Barbarian... we'll see how that plays out... if it is as effective as a Rogue or if we use him as a back-up trap-springer. I suppose I should post his character (in the interest of the thread!)... Heavy Infantry/Summoner Barbarian/Druid/Beastmaster Probably Human [Flan] or Half-Orc... all classes with the alternate Dungeonscape abilites. |
| Infinitive08-06-07, 03:27 PM | Here's mine; I've been holding onto him for months after I got an idea from access in a lucky core module. Half-orc Heavy Infantry Barbarian 2/ Druid 1/ Fighter 2/ Warshaper 4/ Outcast Champion X I made a Str monkey barbarian for a core mod that people wanted to run at ECL 2, and got access to the Shapeshift ACF from PHB2. I realized, what with the Destructive Rage feat I'd already taken as a barbarian, turning into a dog and going grapple-happy (the two Fighter levels) would turn this dude into a nigh-unbeatable grappler. More, having access to go into Warshaper at the very first possible moment was a rather nice bonus. |
| LachlarlanIII08-06-07, 04:39 PM | I'll be playing a kobold trapmaster. I still haven't decided on the exact build, but the main contenders are: Kobold Rogue 3/Sorcerer 2/Unseen Seer X or Kobold Rogue 3/Trapsmith 4-5/Rogue X. I will be taking the Kobold Rogue substitution levels 1 and 3 and the Penetrating Strike alternate class feature. |
| dkay80708-06-07, 06:38 PM | Romero the Brute Rhenne Human Barbarian 1/Fighter 4/Hellreaver 10 with a Greatspear. A dumb, yet charming mercenary who always refers to himself in the third person, Romero is a mercenary to the core, doing whatever it takes to get the job done. I'm in the mood for something a bit different and I've never used a reach weapon before. Some of the class abilities of Hellreaver just seem like some fun can be had there. |
| dg867208-07-07, 02:11 PM | Human Cleric of Sotillion w/ Healing and Plant Domain (for the Knowledge Nature as class skill) Take Augment Healing at 1 and Magic of the Land at 3. With a DC15 Knowledge Nature check, my cure mods do 2d8+12 at 3rd level. Basically, he's a support character who can turn a little :) |

Basically, he's a support character who can turn a little :) and what is your human bonus feat???? and as you are already getting BIG boni on healing i would drop the healing domain, it seems a little bit redundant :) "turning a little" is a waste most of the time - undead HD will outrun your abilities quite fast, look for a good feat to burn your turn attempts on it, "divine ward" PHB II is an excellent choice if you have at least 4 turn attempts/day or "domain spontaneity" for your plant domain. ciao martin m. |
| KarmaInferno08-07-07, 06:02 PM | Main is Human Oeridian Male, Cleric 7 / Divine Oracle 2 / Church Inquisitor 5. Lawful. Knight of the Watch. Pholtan. No sense of humor. He is the Law. Throw down your weapons and prepare to be Judged. Secondary (Who actually I've been playing a lot more lately) is Female Human Suloise, a real mutt with Bard 1 / Warmage 6 / Marshal 1 / Divine Oracle 2 / Sublime Chord 2 and is about to add a level of Fatespinner. Sometimes exhorts NPC thugs he encounters to join him in the hero business, the benefits are a lot better. And of course a half-dozen or so other starter characters. -karma |

| Infinitive08-13-07, 11:22 AM | A word of warning, whether the shapeshift ACF meets the requirements for warshaper is currently being debated on the LG-Druids Yahoo group. Expect table variation. Ed I have to disagree with any debate on the matter. The books, as written, seem to be exceptionally clear on the matter. Well, I'll put it this way. The Warshaper's requirement lists several different abilities that can qualify you for for the class. The last line is, and I quote, "Any supernatural ability that allows you to shapeshift." Going to the PHB2, we check the shapeshift ACF. Within the first four lines of the desciption of this ability, this line appears (paraphrasing, AFB): "Shapeshift is a supernatural ability that requires a swift action to activate or deactivate." As far as I can see, the ability not only seems to meet the class reqs at face value, but uses almost the same language to describe the ability as Warshaper uses to delineate its requirements. If you're still in doubt, compare the eligebility there to that given by Bear Warrior; if it weren't specifically outlined that Bear Warrior gave access, I would be questioning using that class to gain access long before questioning Shapeshift. More, given the rather dramatic power level disparity that you get when comparing Wild Shape + Animal Companion Vs. Shapeshift, it seems pretty obvious to me that one of the only good reasons to take this ACF is as a dip when you're either trying to do something very specific that requires either high Str or high mobility, or when trying to qualify for Warshaper. Of course, at the end of the day, if a Circle member makes a ruling or a DC comes out that addresses it directly, whatever we all have to say doesn't matter in the least. |

Though if my group is really hurting for a BDF, I could bring out Thunkar, a wood elf barbarian with a size large axe. brb1/brd4/dragon disciple10 is how I think he might go, though I don't plan on advancing him much at all unless he's needed for Ruins. |
