| rogerd04-11-07, 06:08 PM | My character is a Level 8 Spiked Chain light fighter with about 8K in his pocket. Relevant stats: Attack +14 (2d4+7), +12 bow (1d8+4), Saves: +13/+5/+3, AC 24, hp 61 Only access worth considering is for weapon enhancements (sacred, corrosive), and an Ioun stone (pink rhomboid, +2 CON). For roleplaying reasons, I wish to keep my headband of resistance from the Core Special a while back, even though it is more expensive than a vest of resistance. As I see it, my options are: 1. Upgrade the bow and chain. Likely +2 chain, +1 bow, but could be the other way. The +2 weapon could be +2 or +1 sacred (adventure access expiring) or +1 corrosive (any access) 2. Upgrade the headband (4.5K) and armor by +1 each. 3. Upgrade the armor by +2 4. Get the Ioun stone for the HP. For the record, the exact classes are: Fighter-4/Barbarian-1/Outcast Champion-2/Exotic Weapon Master-1. I'm planning to take another OC level and then go into Holy Liberator at 9. Though I didn't start that way, I'm ending up rather multiple attribute dependent, and I have plans for a Periapt of Wisdom, Cloak of Charisma, and Belt of Giant Strength. I have Gloves of Dexterity +2 now and don't really mean to improve them further for quite a while since I've maxed my DEX bonus (+3) for mithral full plate. Thoughts? Roger |

| rogerd04-11-07, 06:40 PM | I should have mentioned that my spiked chain is currently a +1 spiked chain with an enhancement that makes it good for bypassing DR. Does that make a difference, or should I still grab the Sacred? Roger |
| Redfist04-11-07, 06:45 PM | Maybe a different material spiked chain? +1 cold iron sacred? |
| Japangirl04-11-07, 07:08 PM | If you want your amulet slot for something else, the ioun stone would be really good. If that access is expiring, I would go for that or the Sacred upgrade, because the Con ioun stones are rare. I've never seen one on any of my characters (and how I keep hoping!). |
| clannagh04-11-07, 07:19 PM | the things most likely to prevent a death are saves and con i would go for the headband upgrade and the con stone (agree with japangirl on that) for +2 fort +1 reflex +1 will AC is neither here nor there for a chain fighter one small item to pick up as a chain fighter is a wand of enlarge so any friendly arcanist that has time can enlarge you (even better take ranks in UMD and the complete mage feat that lets you use wands all day) |

On the other hand, as a frontline fighter you'll probably eventually want more than a +2 enhancement bonus to Con, and the ioun stones aren't upgradeable. If you're willing to cope with just a +2 Con bonus (or you REALLY need that periapt of Wisdom), then yes, go for the ioun stone, they're hard to find. Sacred is a very nice enhancement, especially if fiends are common enemies in your region, but as others have said, it might be better to put it on a different weapon rather than the one that's already good-aligned. |
| jstorrie04-12-07, 02:53 PM | If you're planning to use a Periapt of Wisdom then yes, get the ioun stone. Sacred on your bow may be a fair idea. There are times when you don't want to get up close with some fiend, or when it's staying out of your reach. |
| rogerd04-12-07, 08:19 PM | It seems like the consensus is to favor the CON Ioun stone with a strong minority for getting the sacred weapon. I agree if I did that, the bow makes sense. If I don't upgrading the headband does seem to be the next thing on the agenda. I currently have a +1 Amulet of Natural Armor (planning to sell eventually for the Periapt.) I suppose I could sell that now and I could just afford the Headband upgrade and an Amulet of Health +2. The reason I want the Periapt is that Wisdom drives Holy Liberator spells. It also improves my Will saves as a nice bonus. I suppose if I decide I don't want any spells that I can just get the Amulet of Health instead. I generally dislike not being able to use a class ability though. I could maybe reverse it, getting the Ioun stone of Wisdom +2 and bumping Wisdom from here on out. Gives me a max WIS of 12 at 12th level, but I could cast 2nd level spells at least. The wand of enlarge person is a good idea, though scrolls might be a good short term solution. I hate that silly potion! Roger |
