Why do all my D&D theory builds end up so weird? (Master Thrower Inside) [Archive] - Wizards Community

I never really mean for this to happen :(

Human
Barbarian 1/Fighter 6/Master Thrower 3/Sorcerer 1/Dragon Disciple 4

STR 16
DEX 14
CON 15
INT 8
WIS 8
CHA 12

1 Barbarian: Brutal Throw, Extra Rage
2 Fighter: Power Attack
3 Fighter: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot
4 Fighter: CON +1
5 Fighter: Weapon Focus: Spear
6 Master Thrower: Rapid Shot, Deadeye Shot
7 Sorcerer
8 Master Thrower: STR +1, Two with one blow
9 Master Thrower: Power Throw
10 Dragon Disciple
11 Dragon Disciple
12 Dragon Disciple: STR +1, Weapon Spec: Spear
13 Dragon Disciple
14 Fighter
15 Fighter: Ranged Weapon Mastery: Piercing, Melee Weapon Mastery: Piercing

Guided Shot is ridiculously good for this guy, letting him toss up to 100ft(200 at 15th) without any penalties. He ends up with 26 STR while Raging before a Belt, which can be used to either throw a Spear Two-Handed through a guy, or just stab him really hard.

You missed a feat at 3rd level.

I don't see how ranger levels help you. I'd stay with fighter, and lose a few skill points. In return, you can tromp around in mithril full plate, which is a good move when you have a dex of 12 and don't need to close with your enemies.

I forgot about the whole light armor only thing. Shucks. Build changed due to this hindsight.

I double checked, and it's a full-round action to throw a two-handed weapon not designed to be thrown. It doesn't mention anything about a weapon that is geared to be thrown.

I double checked, and it's a full-round action to throw a two-handed weapon not designed to be thrown. It doesn't mention anything about a weapon that is geared to be thrown.

From the SRD:
Thrown Weapons: Daggers, clubs, shortspears, spears, darts, javelins, throwing axes, light hammers, tridents, shuriken, and nets are thrown weapons. The wielder applies his or her Strength modifier to damage dealt by thrown weapons (except for splash weapons). It is possible to throw a weapon that isn’t designed to be thrown (that is, a melee weapon that doesn’t have a numeric entry in the Range Increment column on Table: Weapons), but a character who does so takes a –4 penalty on the attack roll. Throwing a light or one-handed weapon is a standard action, while throwing a two-handed weapon is a full-round action. Regardless of the type of weapon, such an attack scores a threat only on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. Such a weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

You may seem to be attaching the various throwing times to the part about improvised throwing weapons. They are 2 separate clauses. The throwing times applies to all thrown weapons, unless this has been changed by some erratta or FAQ....

I am leaning toward agreeing with alpha nerd here I believe that text is talking about improvised weapons only when it is talking about the penalty and action type. It then continues talking about their threat range and range increment right after as well. It is not logical to talk about improvised weapons then standard thrown and then come back to improvised. A spear is designed to be thrown why would it be that hard to throw it?

Well, considering the bit about two-handed weapons taking full round actions to throw are both preceeded and followed by specifications for weapons not designed to be thrown (unless you feel like also arguing that spears also have 10' increments and crit for x2), then it's safe to say that that whole rest of the paragraph from the mention of improvised weapons on was referring to improvised throwing weapons, and thus the full round for throwing obviously does not apply to spears.

If you find a DM who thinks spears take a full round action to throw, then you can almost certainly get the senior DM to overrule them. So I wouldn't even worry about table variation on that.

As to the build, are you planning to meet Rapid Shot's 13 dex requirement at level 6 via gloves?

Is there some goal for sorceror beyond meeting dragon disciple reqs? An alternative of a couple levels of bard could pump your damage up a couple notches.

I'm planning a halfling dragon disciple-rage archer who is somewhat similar to this, except he has bard for an extra bit of oomph and uses bows instead of thrown weapons (so no master thrower for me either).

Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple is in there bcause Guided Shot is ridiculously good for a thrower and I've always wanted to put 4 Dragon Disciple into something. I forgot about the DEX requirement of Rapid Shot. I'm still deciding on dropping 2 WIS for 2 DEX or relying on gloves.

What's more interesting is this:

From the SRD:

Thrown Weapons: Daggers, clubs, shortspears, spears, darts, javelins, throwing axes, light hammers, tridents, shuriken, and nets are thrown weapons. The wielder applies his or her Strength modifier to damage dealt by thrown weapons (except for splash weapons). Regardless of the type of weapon, such an attack scores a threat only on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. Such a weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

Throwing a weapon is a standard action at minimum, not an attack action. Therefore you could only ever throw one in a round even if you had iterative attacks, quick draw, and rapid shot.

Which must mean that that sentence only applies to weapons not designed to be thrown.

Or is over ruled by the full-attack action.

Then why would shuriken need to be treated differently with regards to attacks per round?

SRD:

Shuriken: A shuriken is a special monk weapon. This designation gives a monk wielding shuriken special options. A shuriken can’t be used as a melee weapon.
Although they are thrown weapons, shuriken are treated as ammunition for the purposes of drawing them, crafting masterwork or otherwise special versions of them and what happens to them after they are thrown.

They aren't treated differently with regards to attacks per round. All that is saying is that

1. You don't need quickdraw
and
2. You can craft 50 +1 shurikens for 2000g but if you hit with them they are destroyed.
