Ok, so I've got an idea, and I thought I would bounce it past you guys...

I think it would be fun to play a witch. So I will. If you think that barbarians are better, I couldn't really care less, take yourself to the next thread.

I'm thinking more of the Willow type than the Wicked witch of the East, someone who looks sweet and kind. "Oh, are my skeletons in your way? Sorry, I'll move them, then"

A black cat, a broom, and a pointy hat are completely required. So now, how do we get there?

I'm thinking druid, with big ranks in craft alchemy and brew potion. Craft wondrous is probably needed as well, but I'm not sure off the top of my head if Druids can make brooms of flying or not. I'm limited to non-metal armor, but black leather actually fits the concept just fine.

Perhaps I'll do something like druid 3/wizard 3/arcane heirophant 8/mystic theurge 2. Is that better, or worse than straight druid?

I would even consider druid/bard/theurge, and abusing that fascinate ability to the best of my ability. Since it runs off of my perform DC, it doesn't suffer as much from multiclassing.

Any thoughts?

Well, first of all, buy this miniature:

Second, I think Geomancer fits the traditional witch bill better than Mystic Theurge or Arcane Heirophant.

Some levels of Hexblade might also fit.

Avoid Evocation spells. Most traditional witches didn't cast very flashy spells. Even Willow only used Lightning Bolt in one encounter. Traditional witches charmed people, cast curses on them, scryed, turned them into newts and statues, made themselves look like someone else and otherwise did things other than blowing them up with fireballs.

Go for spells that require Rituals or use Ritualistic Magic.

Chose Rene as your race. Seems to fit the flavor the best. Who knows, maybe you can get access to the Veth PrC.

Choosing to be of the Rhennee race is definitely the way to go. Their society is analogous to medieval era Gypsies, with enchantment and other witchy stuff assumed by most commoners of all of the Rhennee.

You may also want to consider being an Enchantment specialist, with Spell Focus enchantment as well. This sounds very witchy to me.

(Note: Wizard of the Coast probably prefers to avoid references to "witches" and "witchcraft" in its products, since it is considered a modern day religion by practicing pagans. Just as the clerics in 3.0+ D&D do not worship deities that are analogous to real world gods, either ancient or modern.)

Personally, I don't think a druid makes a very convincing witch. Brew Potion, meanwhile, fits the bill for flavor but is a pretty underpowered feat; if you really want to go for it, realize that it's going to be a fairly dead feat buy. You can make use of it, yes, but no more than you would of something like Scribe Scroll. (Much less use, actually, since Scribe Scroll has fewer restrictions.)

I would expect that a straight cleric or sorcerer/wizard caster progression would fit the character best. As a cleric, you could focus on the domains that grant bonuses to your Charm and Compulsion spells. Meanwhile, you'd gain all the cleric's necromantic abilities to deal with undead (assuming, of course, that you channel negative energy).

But I believe the best fit would be a straight sorcerer or wizard (until Prestige Class level, anyway). You'd focus on subtle manipulations--charm, fear, illusion, polymorph, etc. Leave the flash to other characters. You'd be a pseudo-face, too, but you'd have to use spells to make it all work. You could take Craft Wondrous to build appropriate toys like a Hat of Disguise, Medallion of Detect Thoughts, Broom of Flying, Cape of the Mountebank, etc.

Because the subtle spells are often save dependent, you'd want to consider Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus.

All in all, it would end up being a fairly common build, but the success of the character idea would depend upon your role-playing. For example, you'd want an appropriate familiar--cat, maybe, or raven. Not one of the cheezy blind-sensing bats...

I'm doing something similar with my Wizard, albeit, he's something of absent-minded Suel, who has to keep remembering that he's the superior race(and does it in a way which likely shows him to be anything but)

The build is Wizard 10/Earth Dreamer 5:
Specialized in Conjuration, Banned Evocation/Necromancy

Feats are:
1 Spell Focus(Conjuration)
1 Augment Summoning
1 Scribe Scroll
3 Earth Sense
5 Craft Wondrous
6 Magic of the Land
9 Rapid Spell

After that, I'm not 100% sure, it seems very unlikely I'm going to get the character to that level any time soon. Arcane Disciple seems like the likely choice - give me some interesting spells for a Wizard.

I like the idea =)

I will point out that unfortunately, the broom of flying has permanency as a requirement to craft, meaning that PC's can't craft the blasted thing. I think that it's really dumb, but that's just me.

I don't think that druid is the way to go either. The abilities just don't fit. I'd be looking more at a wizard with enchantment, necromancy, transmutation and illusion spells, as well as the odd divination. Maybe explosive runes a number of times over ;-)

Sorcerors and bards might make good witches too. They're both spontaneous casters (most witches don't have spellbooks in a lot of the fantasy stories I read!) and can easily focus on enchantments and illusions.

Also, there's a prestige class in Heroes of Horror called Dread Witch, a fear-based arcane caster. Of course, it's Limited, and while I'm bound by RPGA rules not to say where, I have seen access to it.

Also, make sure your character weighs the same as a duck.
