this guy is currently a level 3 fighter level 1 ranger

the ranger level is partly fluff (wood elf favored class) and partly to get wands of CLW

STR 18 DEX 14 CON 14 INT 14 WIS 8 CHA 8

(the con includes a level 4 stat bump and a free bump from a mod)

Feats ..
EWP chain
combat expertise
improved disarm
combat reflexes

I have deliberately avoided the trip feat for character though he will likely take it at a later stage. He seems to trip fine with the chain without the feat

next few levels are likely to be something like ...

5 fighter (Power Attack)
6 fighter (hold the line OR deft opportunist)
7 fighter (Weapon focus Chain)
8 EWM (flurry .. chain)
9 EWM (trip chain) (improved trip)

any thoughts ???

problem...

Str 18 = 10
Dex 14 = 4
Con 12 = 6
Int 14 = 10

= 30...

Edit: found a mistake in my math, disregard.........

As far as your build, with a chain monkey there seems to be only levels of success in the end result. I have never seen a high STR chain weilder that was ineffective, unless it was the application tactics.

he got a free non-level related stat bump.

That was my initial response also, but if you look again he says he has 14 con now, and mommy was showing the points for the base 12 con he would have started at.

Mommy's math is right. Unless you have some other way of bumped stats your math is off by 2. You could just drop the INT down to a 13 to make the character legal. All you would be losing is the skillpoints as you can still use your feats.

indeed .... well his INT actually is 13 on the character sheet .. i was just typing the stats from memory (being at work) and posted the wrong numbers on the board

the confusion arose because INT was originally meant to bump to 14 at level 4 (i like to have an odd stat to bump early) but I actually bumped the CON instead (after the free CON bump from shedding scales) and had forgotten that only one of them was bumped

I suppose the real question here is this ... I am very inclined to ignore improved trip till at least level 9 and maybe even play him mainly with a flail and tower shield pulling out the spiked chain when the situation demands it .. this seems very viable to me as you can still trip with the chain at 10' just lose teh free attack

am I missing something or is this approach make sense
