What would be your ideal 16th level knight? What feats, skills, and attributes would you give him? Would you prestige him out in some way?

How about a 16th level barbarian. How do you see them stacking up against each other? Could you make one or the other exceptionally more powerful with multiclassing?

As a knight, and unless I'm a dwarf, I would take at least four levels before multiclassing. Being able to move full speed while in medium armor is a huge benefit IMO. (as a dwarf I would go to level 3 before multiclassing)

For feats, I would take crowd-control things like Combat Reflexes, Hold-the-Line, Improved Trip, etc. (the whole, 'stand-next-to-me-and-you're-going-to-regret-it' thing)

When multiclassing a knight, I would choose other classes and PrCs that have good synergy such as hexblade (or paladin) and marshal. All of them get good things out of having a high charisma.

In my opinion, multiclassing makes virtually any melee build more powerful. My own current knight incarnation has marshal, hexblade, monk and outcast champion levels. For skills he is a face character of sorts, being somewhat of the chivalrous sort (when needed). The feats are designed to exploit the Bulwark of Defense ability, thus a reach weapon and Delay Potion.

How about a Knight 3/ Cleric with Strength Domain for enlarge 2/ Fighter 2 with a reach weapon and Dwarven Defender x?

Maybe this is facile or off base, but when I first saw knight, I thought "Dwarven Defender."

The only problem with the knight/dwarven defender thing is that you have to spend every single feat you get just to meet the prereqs (and the prereqs suck).

Endurance and toughness stink, but a couple levels of fighter get them for you at no great loss, eh? If you did:
s14
c16
d12
I10 (or 8 if this doesn't add up)
W12
C12

Knight 1 - Power Attack BAB 1
Cleric 1 - Strength, War (?)
Fighter 1 - Endurance, Toughness BAB 2
Knight 2 - BAB 3, Bump Dex
Cleric 2 - BAB4
Fighter 2 - Dodge, something else BAB 5
Knight 3 - BAB 6
Cleric 3 (or Knight 4) - BAB7
Dwarven Defender X

I've only got the SRD just now - when is the best time to punt on Knight?

Not entirely true. Knight's can choose Endurance as their 5th level bonus feat.

Not the best choice, but because dwarven defender requires 7 BAB you'll have one feat that doesn't take up a required feat choice.

As a dwarf, you would probably want to go Knight5/Fighter2/Dwarven DefenderX.

I had a nice Knight5/Fighter1/Knight of Holy Shielding9 build. I love the Knight of Holy Shielding's 8th level power, words of valor. A free action to drop a holy word at a caster level 20 once per day. THAT'll clear out a room, and without any funny business with Divine Metamagic and Divine Spellpower and magic item caster level bumps.

Grab Favored Power Attack to make the KoHS's effective favored enemy of "minions of Iuz" (includes any chaotic evil outsider) that much more fun.

A mounted knight meshes quite nicely with the righteous advance ability of the KoHS.
