| Vamroc03-08-06, 11:05 PM | The level cap is now 16 that means all ninth level PC spells are banned. You don't gain your first 9th level spell until level 17. The only way you can cast a 9th level spell is to have permision from the triad or earn the right in a mod. NPCs are the only ones who can cast these spells. |
| King Kashue03-09-06, 01:49 AM | Uh...correct? Was there a question there, or were you just demonstrating your grasp of D&D math :P :D :P And actually, they're not banned, just no normal LG character has access...A character in the High Level play would... |

Or greater ring of spell storing powered by an NPC. NPC's in the APL14-16 range can also cast them. There are good reasons to leave L9 spells on the core list. |
| Iswald03-10-06, 11:52 AM | It's possible to get a 9th level spell in LG at level 16. But, you'd have to get your charisma up to 28 (base 18 + 4 level bumps + 6 enhancement.) |

If you're referring to the bonus spell(s) based on your casting stat, you don't get that bonus spell unless your spell-casting progression already grants you a slot at that spell-level. I.e., clerics, druids, and wizards can't until 17th, and sorcerers can't until 18th. |
| redgamer03-10-06, 02:57 PM | Some classes progress faster than Cleric and Wizard. I think Divine Crusader can do it but it is a terribly suboptimal build. |
| amnuxoll03-21-06, 03:33 PM | What about a 15th level Cleric with a Candle of Invocation? |
| Arvagor03-21-06, 05:27 PM | You are correct, a candle of invocation would be a way that a cleric PC could cast 9th level spells. I think that the usefulness of such a tactic is extremely limited, however... As a DM, I am going to be very watchful that the PC is taking care to keep the flame lit/protected etc., and that timekeeping is kept more accurately, as the candle only lasts for 4 hours, and the higher level spells are lost if/when the flame goes out -- not just burnt out, but it's possible if the lantern is dropped, doused in water, etc. |
| jokem03-21-06, 07:44 PM | What about a 15th level Cleric with a Candle of Invocation? Or if the 16th level caster had access to a +1 spellcaster level Ioun Stone (hard to come by, but possible) |
| Lupo03-21-06, 08:19 PM | Or if the 16th level caster had access to a +1 spellcaster level Ioun Stone (hard to come by, but possible) the ioun stone can be crafted, that's not the problem. but it only adds a caster level to spells you can cast, it does't let you cast spells that you can't cast. so you get an additional 1d6 of damage or some more minute of duration and higher level for (greater) dispell and so on. but if you are level 15 it wil not enable you to cast a ninth level spell. with level 16 you are out of normal campaign anyway and can go into high level modules. there ninth level spells should be fairly common (at least for all those who went straight caster progression). ciao martin m. |
