| kjenks03-30-06, 09:46 PM | What's up with playing up and down? I hear a rumor that there's a rule change. |
| redgamer03-31-06, 07:09 PM | half xp playing down half xp and gold playing up this is as its been for a while now I think |
| kjenks03-31-06, 07:39 PM | LGCS 5.0, page 55, said... === Under Living Greyhawk Levels of Play: Replace, “APL also affects the amount of experience you may gain at the end of the adventure. If your character is three character levels or more either higher or lower than the APL this adventure is being played at, that character will receive only half of the experience points awarded for the adventure.”; With, “APL also affects the amount of experience and gold you may gain at the end of the adventure. If your character is three character levels or more either higher or lower than the APL this adventure is being played at, that character will receive only half of the experience points for the adventure. If your character is three character levels or more lower than the APL this adventure is being played at, that character will receive half gold for the adventure as well.” === That wording is missing from the latest LGCS 596CY. Does this just mean that all of the adventures have the correct rules now? Or does it mean that there's a change in the rules? |

| pedr04-02-06, 04:35 AM | OK, I've checked all the year 5 Core modules I have access to and they all have this text: "APL also affects the amount of experience and gold a character can gain at the end of the adventure. If a player character is three character levels or more either higher or lower than the APL at which this adventure is being played, that character receives only one-half of the experience points and gold for the adventure. This simulates the fact that either the PC was not challenged as much as normal or relied on help by higher-level characters to reach the objectives." Unfortunately the message from Steven isn't quite clear enough to my mind to be taken as saying "The boilerplate text is correct; we've changed the rule so people playing up only get half gold". If that is the situation, it would help a great deal to have that stated in unambiguous terms. It seems to me to be a big change that shouldn't just be introduced by deleting text from the LGCS. |
| JamesMaissen04-03-06, 03:09 PM | The text was intentionally changed in the most recent version of the LGCS. The text in the boilerplate of adventures should be correct. As the title asks, why the change? If anything I was hoping that we would see the LGCS change this to a simple cap of APL played and PC level. The caps by APL for each round are standardized now and would seem an easy table to say include in a boilerplate for each module (so as to include lower than APLs supported). I'm wondering what the intent of the rule really is here? Originally it was said to discourage extremely low level players from playing way way up for insane gains.. but this still doesn't solve that (getting 3300gp at 1st level isn't right, is it?). Anyway, insight would be helpful here, Thanks, James Maissen |
| Sieylianna04-03-06, 08:27 PM | I'm wondering what the intent of the rule really is here? Originally it was said to discourage extremely low level players from playing way way up for insane gains.. but this still doesn't solve that (getting 3300gp at 1st level isn't right, is it?). I think it's to cut the number of LG tables which go off and increase the number of PC kills. I'm not going to play down and take half of everything. If the table doesn't go off or the low level PCs die because they're short players or specific classes, that's not my problem. The fact that they didn't publicize it also means that AR's I (as well as other judges) signed at a recent convention are wrong. I'm sure they didn't want to mention it because it led to a huge uproar the last time they suggested it on the draft discussion list. So they decided to stealth this change through with the expected results: total confusion over what the rules are today. Ed |
| afbeer04-05-06, 07:46 AM | look a page further (p. 56). There is a question about playtesting a mod and gaining enough levels to be considered playing down. The answer references that playing down awards 1/2 xp only. [and answers that awards are at original level of play] Yours |
