10-16-07, 05:44 PM I have access to a whip of defending. Could my 10th lvl cleric cast greater magic weapon on it, stick it in my backpack and transfer the AC bonus without actually wielding it? Could I use multiple whips in this way?

I have access to a banner of law (from heroes of battle). Could I buy a banner of evil, mount it on my longspear, and use the spear without penalty while also having the party benefit from protection from evil?

If I cast a spell that deals damage to adjacent squares, such as ring of blades, and I'm in a grapple - does it damage my grapple opponent?

10-16-07, 05:57 PM 1) This is one of the cases where if it doesn't make sense, then no. You need to wield the whip to get the benefit.

3) To grapple, your opponent must enter your square. You're not getting hit by the blades, neither is he.

10-16-07, 09:28 PM Defending: A defending weapon allows the wielder to transfer some or all of the sword’s enhancement bonus to his AC as a bonus that stacks with all others. As a free action, the wielder chooses how to allocate the weapon’s enhancement bonus at the start of his turn before using the weapon, and the effect to AC lasts until his next turn.

Emphasized the relevant part of the description. You must wield the weapon to get the benefit of the special ability.

At a bare minimum I would have to say it needs to be in-hand, ready to be used, even if you don't attack with it that round.

Some GMs require it to actually be used in combat for the defending part to work.

10-17-07, 07:39 AM Access to the Banner of Law doesn't give you access to Banner of Evil (which I think gives Prot Good anyway) but if you did have access to it I believe you could stick it on your longspear and use it without penalty ..but that's from memory and I'd need to reread the banner stuff to be sure.

And multiple Defending weapons don't stack, either. Even unnamed bonuses won't stack with themselves.

-Matt was all ready to equip two Defending gauntlets, Defending armor spikes, and Defending shield spikes when he found that out.

10-18-07, 11:48 AM It's not that unnamed bonuses won't stack with themselves, it's that bonuses from the same or similar sources don't stack.

Unnamed bonuses from completely different sources will stack, like say perhaps you had a ring and a weapon that both gave unnamed bonuses to Will saves.

Two defending weapons, however, can safely be considered the same or similar.

You only have banner of law access, not access to any of the other three. However, you can mount this on your longspear and attack without penalty, yes–it's how the banners are meant to be used.
