Is it just me or is this one of the most powerful special attacks ever. It reads in part "Creatures on or more size categories smaller than the elemental might take damage when caught in the whirlwind. And may be lifted into the air. An affected creature must succeed on a reflex save when it comes in contact with the whirlwind or take the indicated damage" There's more but i'm too lazy to type it all. MMp95-98(yeah it's long) So with a 100 ft movement an air Elemental can move in and out of a PC's square 20 times in a round forcing him/her to make up to 20 saves. Now everytime they fail a save they are forced to make another or get sucked into the whirlwind. It seems it might just be better to fail your first two saves intentionally and ride out the whirlwind?

Am I missing something?

So you get sucked into the whirlwind. And you take some damage. Is this really worse than getting turned to stone, or looking at a medusa, or any of that?

You can attack the whirlwind from inside, and you're only a fly potion away from attempting to leave.

It's the fact that it can force you to make 20-40 reflex saves in a round. and as soon as you fail, and you almost certainly will he can fly up and drop you. You need only save once per round or be turned to stone

Once you are stone you are out of the fight pretty much, unless someone has a way to get you free. If you get sucked up into a whirlwind you sill have options.

As with most things if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The rules don't say so I suppose some sadistic GM could take that interpretation but my ruling is that since riding in the whirlwind for the entire round only causes the damage once, "running over" you multiple times in a single round can't cause any more damage than getting "run over" once.

Should I encounter somebody who is ruling it can pass over you multiple times, yeah, failing the second save (to get sucked in) is the best bet...if you can survive the inevitable fall a couple rounds later.

That said it IS a very powerful attack. The real danger is the elemental sucking a party member or two away and flying off with them, then dropping them from 200' up in the air, well out of range of assistance from other PC's.
