| DarkKnight07-01-06, 02:04 PM | Ok, I just received access to an Animated Shield. I'm wondering how that's going to work with my archer. Will I still be able to use my bow since the shield acts on its own? Also, will I still receive the Armor Bonus from the shield when I use my bow? Thanks for the help. |
| JJeff07-01-06, 07:57 PM | I do believe so since an animated shield allows a person to use a 2-H weapon and still get the shield bonus. |
| DarkKnight07-01-06, 09:03 PM | Can I upgrade an Animated Shield's enhancement bonus? Say I have a favor that allows me to upgrade a shield or armor by +1. Can this favor be used on the Animated Shield or does it have to specifically say that I can use it to upgrade an Animated Shield? Thanks again for the help. |

| JJeff07-02-06, 12:54 PM | Since an animated shield is a shield that has the Animated enhancement, I would say that the shield is a +3 shield already. All magical weapons and armour/shields need to have an enhancment bonus of at least +1 before applying other enhancements (which Animated is a +2 ability), thus making it an effective +3 shield. So I would think you cannot make you animated shield a further +1 since it should already be an effective +3 shield |

So I would think you cannot make you animated shield a further +1 since it should already be an effective +3 shield "Animated" is a special ability that can be added to a shield (that already has at least a +1 enhancement), not an enhancement itself. It costs the same as it would to upgrade your shield's enhancement by +2, but it does not add to the shield's hardness or hit points. (While armor is limited to a maximum enhancement of +5, special abilities can be added that make it equivalent to +10 enhancement.) A +1 animated shield could indeed be upgraded to become a +2 animated shield if you had a favor to upgrade a shield from +1 to +2 enhancement. It would cost the same as upgrading from +3 to +4 (+7,000 gp), but the shield would have only a +2 enhancement to add to your AC. Special abilities do not add to your enhancement bonus, they merely add to the effective " + " when you're looking at pricing. Patty |
