Revise the APL system to something to the effect of: "A character receives XP and GP for either the level of the character (odd numbers round up to nearest even APL value), or the APL of the adventure, whichever is lower." Think about that for a moment. It's so simple, and it fixes many problems within the campaign. A 4th-level character receives no benefit for piggybacking on a solid APL 6 table, when instead he should be playing APL 4. A 14th level character playing down with a table of 6th-level characters doesn't suddenly up everyone else's rewards, even though often times the 14th will do all the work. (Not always, but often) Players are encouraged to play their APL, rather then playing up whenever they can to get more XP and GP. It's much simpler to implement than the current "take half" system, as well. In short, revising the system as such leads to stability among tables. Writers can safely write APL 8 for "a table of Level 8s," rather than "a couple of 7ths and some 6ths," or "a 9th, three 6ths, a 7th and an 8th." And that's a good thing. -Matt |
