I didn't see this asked anywhere else on the board, so I was simply wondering why the archivist core class is restricted (technically I guess it's NPC-only).

You aren't allowed to ask... but I would assume it breaks the "roles" when 1 PC can cast ANY spell. All divine with the class abilities.. and all arcane with the "anyspell" spell from the spell domain.

Archivist is basically a Wizard on steroids...
d6 vs d4 hp?
Good Fort and Will vs just Will Save?
1 extra spell per day for all levels?
Can purchase Druid/Ranger/Paladin spells to memorize them?
Can purchase Cleric Domain spells so as to memorize them? While this might be very limited in LG, all it takes is one region that is putting them into treasure and someone from that region who travels, and there goes the whole ball of wax.
Can trade spells with other Archivists(really cuts down on costs)?
4 skill points per level and a better skill list vs 2?
Wear Medium Armor/Masterwork Buckler instead of nothing?

That's not even considering the brokenness that is Dark Knowledge - Stun a creature, no SR, no save?

You're complaining about an ability that requires a DC 35 knowledge check to pull off, and can't be done until at least 11th level?

Ranks = +14
Intelligence = +7 or so
Have a Marshal Cohort who boosts Int Checks +5 or so.

That's +26 right there. Remember, it is no save, no SR, and once you get into the DC 25 ballpark, that's the BBEG at least dazed for one round at the cost of a move action. And in context that isn't even the important part...what can happen is the access to domain spells - spells such as Invisibility, Teleport, Polymorph(Any), Paladin's Lesser Restoration, Ranger's Protection from Energy, Chain Lightning, Horrid Wilting, etc...

If all the triads aren't careful, then once one person gets say Confusion, all of 'em eventually get it.

Uh, NO. That would still be AR based access, and NO class feature overrides the need for AR access. Its the same reason WIZs cant trade limited- spells.

Except that none of these spells are Limited, or Restricted. They're all Core.

If my wizard meets another wizard with Lesser Acid Orb (a Core spell), I can scribe it from his book. I don't need an AR, I just need a source of the spell.

If the archivist was a PC class... they would simply take a special mission to gain access to the spell. It is limited. They dont require access to the domain, only the spell. As an NPC, any mod writer has the abilitiy to simply give the archivist a limited spell (ie Anyspell).

We are allowed to ask why something is Limited, NPC Only, or Restricted. We just can't ask for anything to actually be moved to a less restrictive list.

First, I hope that certain individuals who think that Archivists are uber-wizards realize that they are clerics, and gain spells from the cleric list, though they can learn druid spells as well. They just have prayerbooks (i.e. spellbooks). They also have split primary casting scores, with INT being the primary for highest level spell castable and save DC, but only gain bonus spells from WIS.

I didn't see this asked anywhere else on the board, so I was simply wondering why the archivist core class is restricted (technically I guess it's NPC-only).

I have two opinions:

1) They detract from LG's stance that all divine power flows from gods/nature. Since the Archivist is more like a wizard flavor wise, the Council may have decided that it didn't fit.

2) They have Dark Knowledge, and are cast more as anti-heroes (given that several religions wouldn't really like them, in addition to their Dark Knowledge), which is another reason why they may have been banned (though, personally, Archivists would fit perfectly with deities of learning and/or magic, such as Boccob and Wee Jas, despite being creepy).

The following are all 'divine' spells and therefore acquirable...
Chain Lightning(Air)
Mislead(Luck, Trickery)
Anti-Magic Field(Magic 6)
Enlarge Person(Strength)
Fly, Dimension Door, Teleport, Greater Teleport(Travel)
Invisibility, Confusion, Polymorph Any Object(Trickery)
Cat's Grace, Haste(Celerity)
Ice Storm, Wall of Ice, Cone of Cold(Cold)
Heroism, Greater Heroism(Courage)
Permanent Image(Creation)
Suggestion, Dominate Person, Mass Suggestion(Domination)
Magic Missle, Wall of Force(Force)
Rage, Mind Blank(Liberation)
Identify, Clairvoyance(Oracle)

Notice any useful Wizard spells in there? There's more, I was just picking out the immediate ones.

This also isn't including all the various Ranger and Paladin spells that are often lower level than their equivalents - taking Lesser Restoration as a Paladin 1 instead of as a Cleric 2 spell as an example.

Now it may seem improbable that any one Archivist is going to get access to all those spells - but as all of those spells are core, they can simply trade them as a wizard would. If Archivists start getting made, one of the first things to do is request special missions to get access to scrolls of the core spells, then meet up with other Archivists...

The split stat isn't that big of a deal - you ignore Wisdom's bonus saves because you get a bonus spell right from the start.

Archivists can only choose spells off of the cleric list, so, again, IIRC on the rules about transfering items (i.e. you can't), then this isn't likely to happen, unless there's a lvl 1 Restoration scroll specifically penned by a paladin who decided that Scribe Scroll was a worthy feat for her/him.

Now it may seem improbable that any one Archivist is going to get access to all those spells - but as all of those spells are core, they can simply trade them as a wizard would. Actually, it is pretty hard. You can only learn spells after adventurers, and any items loaned (including scrolls) revert to the origional owner, so you can't really keep the scroll afterward or use a convient time block during the mod. Now, considering that Scribe Scroll is hardly a hot feat among clerics and druids, and even less so among paladins and rangers, I'm not seeing a massive problem from that angle, since you'd have to hunt down a charcter with the appropriate domain who happened to also scribe that specific domain spell as a scroll, and lend it to you after the adventure.

Of course, you're also getting into the slippery slope territory. There are those who farm specific mods for specific items to tweak their characters. The fact that there are some archivists who would do this is also unsuprising. It is, however, not going to be incredibly easy by any means.

There also probably isn't going to be a secret cabal of archivist players passing around arcane spells -- many people don't really want to play a game with 3 or 4 archivists looking for an excuse to do this, I'd imagine. Of course, we can call up imagines of evil groups of Archivist PCs all playing Archivists with and evil DM who only exists to fulfill their power-gaming needs...but that can be said of anyone.

And, in the end, there's nothing stopping the Circle from limiting or restricting access to normally arcane spells, such as only being able to learn one per every spell level, or something like that (the nice think about LG is that they can tweak something that could cause problems so it doesn't, like Polymorph).

The split stat isn't that big of a deal - you ignore Wisdom's bonus saves because you get a bonus spell right from the start.

No you don't. You have the number of spells per level that a cleric (remember domain spells) or a specialist wizard would have. That's hardly "getting a bonus spell right from the start". Consider the restrictions and hassle that Archivist have to go through to gain access to their spells, compared to clerics, and considering their poor BAB compared to other divine casters, there's really nothing here.

In the end, you have a cleric who learns spells like a wizard with fewer restrictions on 1 spell prepaired per level, who has some nifty extra abilities if they spread their extra skill points around knowledge skills to make any consistant use of the Dark Knowledge ability, and perhaps a smattering of wizard spells if they can fine the appropriate domain-spell scrolls.

Actually, the first Special mission would be access to "anyspell" which is limited. Then they can start memorizing ANY arcane spell, as well as ANY divine.

And you are correct in your thinking that archivists will take as many spells from domains/secondary casters (paladin/ranger...) as possible. Anyspell would also opem up all the arcane secondary caster classes (assasin/hexblade...)

They gain free known spells from the cleric list, but they still have CORE access to all the domain/secondary caster spells, so purchasing scrolls of them is still allowed.

Also, metaorgs become a great way for them to gain access to spells. This org grants all Conjuration 1-X level spells, etc...

And yes, other archivists is also another way for them to collect more spells, since they would be able to scribe spells (CORE access) from each other. I could easily se 2 archivists in a party, One taking the blaster spells and one taking the healing spells for the day. Or they could split the roles down the middle, in case one of them got dropped.

They gain free known spells from the cleric list, but they still have CORE access to all the domain/secondary caster spells, so purchasing scrolls of them is still allowed.

Except that these scrolls come off of the DMG tables on p. 239 - 243, which list all such spells that cleric don't normally have access to as arcane spells, which Archivists can't learn. There is no specific rule on the topic, actually, but I'd think that the rules would default to the DMG on the matter, which sets a clear prescendant (since a scroll has to be arcane or divine) -- unless a spell is on a (base) cleric, druid, paladin, or ranger's spell list, it is assumed to be only available as an arcane spell (assuming it's available to wizards, sorcerers, and/or bards, and unless the mod specifcially says otherwise).

Also, metaorgs become a great way for them to gain access to spells. This org grants all Conjuration 1-X level spells, etc...

Even if we assume that the player can choose, then all that requires a little line of clarification that scrolls of spells that are only available as arcane spells if they have a base class listed as having access to the spell, and vice-versa for divine spells.

It would simply require a bit of clarification that wasn't necessary before since there was no class that could potentially cross the boundry in this fasion.

And yes, other archivists is also another way for them to collect more spells, since they would be able to scribe spells (CORE access) from each other. They can copy scrolls. However, the I don't see this being a pervasive problem, since the Archivist has to gain access to the spell in divine format in the first place, which is probably difficult, as I pointed out above. Even if it would become a problem, there's an easy way to fix it before it's even an issue by limiting the number of such spells that can be learned, or how many can be scribed after an adventure, etc.

If an Archivist had a complement of wizard spells, then that charcter would be able to effectively be a wizard, so having 2 archivists wouldn't be hard to see. More, which one would expect if there were some sort of organized attempt to cheese the system, would be unlikely.

Sure it is. It is the end of the year, you've yet to use a special mission with your Archivist of about 5th level. Pick one of the spells on the list and ask for a special mission for it in Scroll form. Then scribe it to your book. Have a couple of friends who are also Archivists do the exact same thing, except they pick different scrolls.

Meet up in an adventure and exchange spells. Repeat with every archivist you meet up with - as it is a new class, odds are there would be a lot of them initially. It doesn't require organized breaking of the class, all that has to happen is that a few of them do it - and just as wizards are happy to exchange spells, even players not out to break the class are going to help out without necessarily realizing what's going on. Even before the special missions start going off, people are going to be scribing Druidic spells in this fashion right off the bat.

At a certain point, most archivists will have their pick of domain and druidic spells to scribe. Another way to also go about deliberately breaking it is to take an Archivist as a cohort and have Scribe Scroll.

The Circle, with the exception of Polymorph, is really only allowed to restrict things to prevent them - and the problem with restricting is if you are playing a Cleric with Scribe scroll(as all members of the Rune Domain are), you're suddenly not allowed to scribe your known spells or you restrict Archivists.

Prayerbook: ...At any time, an archivist can also add spells found on scrolls containing divine spells to his prayerbook, but he must make any rolls and spend the time required (see Adding Spells to a Wizard's Spellbook on page 178 of the Player's Handbook). The archivist can learn and thus prepare nonclerical divine spells in this fashion but the two free spells he gains for advancing in class level must be selected from the cleric spell list.

Yup.

Druidic spells are meant to be used by Archivists. Hence their ability to learn any divine spell.

As for special missions, I'm not particularly familiar with them.

At a certain point, most archivists will have their pick of domain and druidic spells to scribe. Another way to also go about deliberately breaking it is to take an Archivist as a cohort and have Scribe Scroll.

The cohort would definantly be a way to break an Archivist.

That doesn't make much sense. For one, is LG run by wizards, or what? I've seen people say that it's run by wizards, it's not, etc. I'm guessing this means that LG is sanction by Wizards but not run by them. But Polymorph isn't the only example -- item creation, limited access PrCs, especially on ones requiring contact with being X, the clarification lists of various spells beyond Polymorph, the rules for raising the dead (which are different form the actual durations given for the spells), etc.

Secondly, not allowing the Circle to make changes for balance seems foolish. After all, which is better -- having what amounts to your best official game (for Wizards, who sanctions LG) feature the class or to have it restricted because that's all that you are letting the game do? In the average game, you have a DM and a single group of players. The DM is responsible for setting restrictions and guidelines for the game, either directly, with houserules, or indirectly, via access, etc. For example, if I were running a game, Archivist access to arcane spells in divine form would be curtailed, since they would be broken if they could do something that would allow them to gain a great number of arcane spells quickly. Now, Wizards would probably want to look over any proposed changes, but that doesn't meant that the Council shouldn't be able to make them as long as they are reasonable changes.

Hmmm. That's sort of odd, since it contradicts a statement in the 3.5 FAQ that states that all spells in a cleric's domain appear on that cleric's class spell list. I always assumed that to mean that they appeared on the cleric's class spell list, but since the question in that portion of the FAQ is regaurding spell completion and spell trigger items, so I guess I was mistaken.

Archivists don't have a class spell list as such. They can only choose spells from the cleric list as their two bonus spells when they level, but they can learn any divine spell they get their hands on -- paladin, ranger, cleric, druid, etc.

Since clerics can make divine scrolls of domain spells, and since some of the those spells are otherwise arcane-only spells, this means that Archivists can learn those normally arcane-only spells, but without the restriction of 1 per day per level that normal domain spells have, so it is plausible for one to gain several potent wizard/sorcerer spells over time, especially if you have player collusion.

For example, if I have a lvl 13 cleric of Wee Jas with the Death Domain, since LG replaced Destruction with Finger of Death for the Death Domain, I can scribe that as a divine scroll. An Archivist can copy that scroll into her/his prayerbook, and then prepair it any number of times per day, upto the normal limit.

Now, this wouldn't be the issue if the Circle could restrict this, such as making it so that an Archivist could only have, for example, 2 druid spells per class level and 1 other spell per class level not on the cleric list, or that Archivists could only prepare 1 - 2 druid spells per spell level per day and one other spell not on the cleric spell list per level per day, or some combination of the above, but I'm getting the distinct impression that they can only choose between allowing the class and banning it (which, IMO, is assinine, since a DM in a home game would be able to restrict the spells an Archivist learns through a house rule or simple what was introduced into the game).

No. Any spell that a cleric, paladin, ranger, or druid (or any other divine casting class, which doesn't matter for our purposes) can end up in an Archivist prayer book. This includes normally arcane spells that can be used by clerics as domain spells, not just spells that are on the cleric spell list.

Except that that isn't a clarification. It's a restriction that isn't present in the original class. It's modifying the class in a way that the Circle is not allowed to do.
