I just noticed that the LGCS rule preventing horses from attacking unless they're ridden has been removed. So horses can now be commanded to attack when the rider isn't mounted.

This is especially good for druids with a horse animal companion since they're prohibited from attacking while the rider IS mounted.

Silly question, but why are horse animal companions prohibited from attacking while mounted?

I think Ken is refering to the fact that, since they are not warhorses, they require a move action and a Ride DC20 to keep them from freaking out.

Completely unrelated, but I just noticed, in the article in your sig, they have the stat block wrong for the celestial bison. They don't list his DR (which he has as a 5HD creature)...

Nope. It ain't just the freak-out. Check out the Monster Manual entries for horses and ponies.

A heavy horse cannot fight while carrying a rider.

A light horse cannot fight while carrying a rider.
...
A heavy warhorse can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

A light warhorse can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Ponies are otherwise similar to light horses and cannot fight while carrying a rider.

A warpony can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

So get off your horse and command it to attack. Use Share Spells to cast Beast Claws on it so it can use primary natural weapons instead of secondary natural weapons.

Or do what I do -- don't use your horse to attack. Teach it the Assist Defend trick or the Assist Attack trick to help you do your thing better.

It's not just the MM, it's in the Ride Skill description.

But the DC is only 10, any mounted combat character with a dex of 10 can tap that at level 3. If they have a Dex of 12, they can tap it at level 2.

The Ride description I've been aware of, but have not seen the MM inability of non-warhorse to attack w/rider to go along with it.

The combination of the Ride skill passage and the MM sections completely changes my perspective on war-trained / trained for war to include all warhorse/warpony/riding dog as war-trained of the shelf.

You can use normal horses (or any suitable creature) as a mount in combat; but that DC20 Ride check (as a move action) each round is a killer unless you specialise in it. If you fail the check, its a full-round action, meaning you have wasted the round.
