| JamesMaissen02-02-06, 12:32 AM | The DMG has certain nonexaustive random magical item tables. Let us divorce ourselves from them and allow purchases of any scroll or potion below the given gp cap rather than simply what happens to occur on a random treasure list. This unduly creates a hardship for wizards learning 'core' spells from nonPhB sources and thus skews thier worth and frequency when choosing leveling spells. Further it harms sorcerers by not being able to augment thier spells known by certain specific scrolls (and yet they can freely do so with others). Worse are those PhB spells that fail to occur on the list either by late inclusion in the PhB (Align Weapon) or a simple typo in the DMG (Alter Self). If a spell is core (or one has access to it), why put such a restriction upon it? Will a 3rd caster level arcane scroll of magic missle unduly unbalance the game? Should it be more common to find access to major magic items than Potions of spells that happen to not be on the DMG list? For example the 2nd caster level potion of Mage Armor like the example in the LGCS? -James Maissen |
| Reylance02-02-06, 11:42 AM | Agreed. There's a formula in the DMG; why not use it on all core spells? I'd also like to see the restriction on cost rise from 750 gp to 800 gp. The reason? Everyone would love a few scrolls of restoration. |
| Mortepierre02-02-06, 11:58 AM | Agreed. There's a formula in the DMG; why not use it on all core spells? Amen! |
| Moryath02-02-06, 12:59 PM | I'd agree it's a good idea, although I can see people declaring it game-breaking as well. More discussion warranted, hopefully the Circle won't just quash this idea outright. |
| GreatEscape_1302-02-06, 01:08 PM | I'd be happy to stick with the DMG lists if we could just get 800gp scrolls... restoration is just an important thing to have, especially in the Southwestern Keoland (we're a tad cleric-poor). Cheers, Andrew Lotz |
| Elfen_Archangel02-02-06, 04:54 PM | I agree that we should be able to buy scrolls of all spells that are core. It would help wizards and clerics with their spell lists. Some of us wizards also picked up Divine Oracle. While I could buy scrolls of Augury and Divination, I need campaign documentation for a scroll of commune (the 5th level domain spell) so I can scribe it into my spellbook. Matthew Schad |
| Timlagor02-06-06, 07:30 AM | I agree entirely and would add Wands to the list (it's only 1st level wands after all). Moryath: please could you explain how it's "game-breaking"? i really don't see it. |
| jmweber902-06-06, 09:33 AM | I, too, agree that it makes it very tough for players when a spell is core access but you can't pick it up because you cannot buy a scroll of it. Instead you're left hoping that a) another player at the table has a spell you desire and will let you copy it; b) access will appear on the AR for buying scrolls of it; or c) a spellbook will appear on the AR nthat contains the desired spell(s) in it. I don't even play a wizard or sorcerer but I can see how difficult this makes things for them. My only caster is a druid mutt (only 3rd level spells) but I have the ability to cast higher level spells from scrolls. It would be nice to be able to use some of those 4th level spells from the Complete/ Compendium books via a scroll. John Weber |
| thorinXXX02-08-06, 11:30 AM | I agree with all of the above. There is no need to have an arbitrary limit (beyond price cap) on which core spells one can buy potions and scrolls for. It is even more absurd to have such limits on which potions and scrolls can be crafted. |

You have to "find" a spell before you can learn it. That being said, the PHB/DMG scroll list IS incomplete due to rushed editing, so how about a compromise that we can buy any core spell *out of the PHB* on a scroll? |

You pick the non-list spells at level up and buy the list ones. Thats what the OP meant by 'skews the worth' That being said, the PHB/DMG scroll list IS incomplete due to rushed editing, so how about a compromise that we can buy any core spell *out of the PHB* on a scroll? If its 'core', it should be 'core'. There are too many levels already, dont go creating new ones. |
