| kjenks02-09-06, 04:54 PM | Can we spend over-cap gold before we get it? Like, on the first day of the adventure, before we've been paid anything or looted anything, can I spend 50 gp on a potion of CLW, use it in the first combat, then, at the end of the adventure, take that 50 gp out of over-cap gold? (If there isn't any over-cap gold, I'd end up paying for the potion out of my share.) Or do we need to earn/loot that gold or its equivalent BEFORE I spend the 50 gp? I've seen it played both ways. A note in the LGCS seems in order. |

| Krenish02-10-06, 09:19 AM | Good question, not for the specifics, but for the issue in general. I've seen over-cap gold done a lot of different ways, and would like something in the LGCS saying how it works. I've seen some DMs ignore the issue entirely (the gp cap times the number of players is the absolute most money you can get), some say that you can use it in the adventure, and some even let you use it to pay upkeep or resurrection costs (good thing, elsewise, I'd have lost a 4th level, and my only, character in the first mod of a three day con). The gp payoff to each character in mods is listed as half the value of the item (for selling) automatically divided by 6. If there's a group of 4, does this mean that there is double the gp/character available for the party to use during the mod? And how does this idea interact woth boosting the APL of a 6 person table? What's the APL difference between a group of six 1st level characters and a group of 4 1st levels with 900 gp to blow between em? |

I am not sure if it is "legal" or not, but I consider these Circle web articles to be clarifications of rules that have already been made, so they are "legal" in the campaign. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lggt/20040615a |
| kjenks02-21-06, 11:20 PM | This topic was not covered in the final LGCS 5. |
| kjenks10-17-06, 11:33 AM | Bump. |
| jstorrie10-17-06, 12:48 PM | You should be able to use it during the adventure for whatever purposes you like, though you can't take it with you past the adventure in any form (including items you've purchased.) But you can spend it on NPC spellcasting and on consumables, which can be used before you end the adventure. |
| kenobi6510-17-06, 01:10 PM | If you re-read the question closely, it's not just "can we spend over-cap gold"... ...it's "if we spend money *before we earn any gold in the adventure*, and we wind up over the cap, can the over-the-cap money be used to cover those expenditures?" |
| Lightblade10-17-06, 01:59 PM | http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lggt/20040615a # Spend It Once You Find It – You can’t spend the “excess gold” if you don’t have it yet. As you find treasure in the adventure, you can spend it. At the end of the adventure, you deduct that treasure spent from your total gained. In most cases, you find more gold than you can take, so you end up spending gold you would have lost. However, you may be unlucky and find you’ve spent gold above and below the cap. That is a risk you take if you spend it anytime before the end of the adventure. # You Cannot Replace Your Gold With Excess Gold – If you spend your own gold or expend your own equipment, you cannot replace it with the gold/equipment you find in the adventure. So be sure to spend the stuff you find in the adventure first as it cannot simply replace that which you already possessed and spent. This would be a good thing to put in the LGCS, maybe. |
| The_Jester10-18-06, 12:59 AM | If you re-read the question closely, it's not just "can we spend over-cap gold"... ...it's "if we spend money *before we earn any gold in the adventure*, and we wind up over the cap, can the over-the-cap money be used to cover those expenditures?" So, clarification. Doug the druid is adventuring. He has 100 gp and spends 50 on a potion. He then gets paid for the adventure and ends up with a substantial amount over the gold cap. Well, I see two endings: 1) If he keeps the potion he will obviously need to buy it with his own money and mark it on the AR. 2) If he used it in the adventure then how is it any different then if he had bought it with over-the-cap money? It would be the same if he had paid an NPC to cast the spell after the fact. |

It would be the same if he had paid an NPC to cast the spell after the fact. It's different, because the only money you had to spend was your own. It has to come out of your funds because the party hasn't earned anything yet -- that's the whole point of the paragraph beginning "You Cannot Replace Your Gold With Excess Gold" at the aformentioned article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lggt/20040615a). Any portion of the money and goods you earn during an adventure are also not yours until the end of the adventure, after everything has been sold and converted to gp. |
