Can you correct (undo) buying an item? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-10-06, 02:51 PM I bought an item that, on hindsight, doesn't do what I thougth it did (I misread the item). The thing I misread actually weight quite heavily im my decision to buy it (I should have double checked, I know).

Is it possible to undo the buying of an item if you find out you misread it?

I think that, if you haven't played the character since making the purchase, you could go back and edit the purchase without any real problem. But, if you've played an adventure since purchasing the item, you're kind of stuck.

Unless the rules on the item say otherwise, you can sell it for half price, but you can't pretend you never bought it.

10-12-06, 03:28 AM I bought it one AR ago (the AR before the last), but as it hindered me more than it aided (when compared to the benefits of what I would normally had bought), I wouldn't say I had any benefit from using it that one scenario.
Basivcally, I had expected that the max Dex bonus of an armor I bought would go up. However it returns out it didn't. I misread (confused it with mithril armor properties). The ironic things is I exchanged it for a mithral armor I originally had.
So I'm inclined to simply undo it. It may be a bit late, but not very.
I've been forced to undo an item I bought when I miscomprehended a favor, so if that was fair, I think this should nbot be a sreious problem.

as for basing it on the fact that you made another mistake reading a favor and were called on that too, I don't see where that is pertinent, if you don't want the item, your choice is to sell it back for 1/2 price, and begin looking before you leap..

I always check if things I do work or are allowed - sometimes on hindsight, which caused the change regarding the favor: it was something I was originally told that I could do it, but later heared that I couldn't, and thus had to reverse.
I was hoping that is I make a mistake in a judgement because I misread something, which is easy to do, that it would not harm if I reverse the change, likely with consultancy of a DM. Maybe with a note "made bloody stupid mistake" on my AR.
If I wanted to cheat, I would have just changed it. Enough people seem to do just that.
I am at least honest enough to ask if this is allowed, if there is perhaps a way to get a break for a change.
Well, I got one speculative answer, so I conclude that it is not considered that big a problem.

Really, this comes down to whether you are willing to do it or not.

I try to follow the rules.
It would help if there was some leniency in the campaign to correct mistakes.
It is annoying - and a bit dumb - if there isn't.

And I probably will be a good boy and keep the stuff and thus throw away 8000 gp.
