As far as I know (and since my book collection is fairly limited, I could well be wrong), chain contingency is not currently available. I suspect that it has not been updated, on the grounds of its potential cheesiness. This is probably reflected in the fate of the spell currently known as instant refuge . When I first saw it in the old Realms supplement Hall of Heroes, it was described as a "modified version of the chain contingency spell", and it did indeed include two different spell effects. It was then known as Elminster's evasion ; I believe it is still canon that the Sage of Shadowdale created it. However, in its latest incarnation (from spell compendium), it only allows one spell effect, which is effectively a souped-up greater teleport that works across planar boundaries. I think that this exemplifies the general tendency to avoid giving two spell effects for the price of one. That said, the various spell matrix variants in spell compendium allow for sequenced spells. However a) the "contained" spells are quite low-level and b) the whole list is Restricted for LG (which is probably a sensible decision, campaign-wise). |
