Is this legal or not legal ?

Say you chose a domain in the beginning thinking it would be different and useful but later find it really hasnt been useful at all.

Can you change to another Domain allowed by your god ?

I am thinking no but I am still rather new to this version of LG

I don't believe you can change, though I think that's a D&D rule, not just a LG rule.

From the SRD, in the section on Divine Magic in the Magic chapter:
A cleric also has access to two domains determined during his character creation.

At the least, I can't find any reference anywhere stating that you can change later.

What if you got your clerical powers taken away then got an Atonement. Would you get to repick your domains? I mean, if you change deities you would obviously have to but what if you stick with the same one?

an atonement to your current deity means you are trying to get back your previous status so I suspect no.

You could atone to some other deity and atone back I suppose .. but you would need triad permission - twice .

I don't see where you need Triad permission to switch deities and get a Cleric of your new god to Atone you; all I see it could need is notation in the Play Notes section of an AR and getting on the same table with said Cleric.

Of course, if you're low level, you might need to get ahold of one at an Interactive instead.

any one who tries to trick a deity should be stripped of any powers ;)

best way, look out for a module with heavy involvement of another deity, hope there is an option for a free switch (i have seen this once or twice) or claim to be a true convert but better never show up in orignal temple again :P

There are some deities who wouldn't mind the switch overly much.

For example, followers of Mayaheine to Pelor (Mayaheine is herself a follower of Pelor) or vice versa probably wouldn't have that great of a challenge.

Now, if you want to switch between Pelor and Wee Jas, or between Quetzalcoatl and one of the Suel deities, you may have a problem.

How about changing from Clangeddin Silverbeard to Moradin ?

Both Dwarven gods. Both offer the domains I would like. Of course it would just be easier to keep the same god and atone or something and just switch Domains.

But hey switching from Axe to Warhammer isnt that bad I guess and there is a temple of moradin in my home city.

They're Dwarves. Spill a few kegs of ale over their altar and they'll probably forgive you.

I can't see a reason against a character falling into another religious group, atoning to that deity and changing domains at the same time. People change and PCs can too, at least non-lawful ones. If at some later time the character rediscovered their previous faith; then atone all over again. I'm sure the deity would be happy that the PC found their way back. There's no reason this couldn't happen. I just can't see it happening very fast.
We are talking about getting two atonements here so it's not like it's free or anything. Those things don't just fall off the end of a mod.

the two atonements method seems against the spirit of the game to me. But then again, with all the barbarian/monk builds around thats certainly not a compelling argument.

GM's call I'd say. Personally, the most I would ask would be one atonement, to your current god. That makes more sense to me. You did nothing wrong, and your faith never wavered, but now you want to worship him...a little differently maybe.

Props to the op btw, most people would have changed their domain with an eraser instead of atonement spells.

Deities Document

General notes ........

Third point from the bottom concerning a cleric changing deities and thereby loosing all powers.

It states you need to "contact your local triad for information on how to obtain an atonement in your region" .

I play with the same group of people. They would notice trust me. And I am pretty much a by the book type of guy anyhow

Yes, but Atonement's a 5th level Cleric spell. All you really need to do is find a Cleric (or divine caster) of 9th level who worships the same god you want to convert to.

It's not that strange to change deities. It does happen. With my PC, for instance. It was a character development thing - Zagyg (who had 'sponsored' her for years - the background story is a bit long) released her, so she could go on and make her own decision. She lost her clerical powers, ofcourse, but briefly afterwards found her path, and received an atonement to become a cleric of Aasterinian (cost me some TU and gold). She still supports Zagyg, and even maintained a church for him (the only one in the Flanaess, so that was fun to do anyway) for more than a year afterwards (she is nuts so most people didn't even notice that she changed faiths).
So one change, where you discover a new goal in life, can happen. IMO it shouldn't be free though. Too many ARs that give out atonement give it for free, imo. Making such a dramatic choice should cost a bit.

Note that changing *back* would be very odd. I can't think of a reason why that would happen to my PC for instance.

According to the new LGCS draft, retraining can be done when you level, as in the PHB2. IIRC, this allows you to switch domains.

considering some domains are heavily front loaded and others backloaded switching domains at will has an effect on game balance

nah .. I was talking more about someone that might want to change domains several times in a build to get optimal domain spells at different levels (domains X & P until level 2 spells then domains Y & G until 4, Z and E for level 5 and then domains Q and R until retirement) .. I dont think one domain swap is a big issue
Bob_the_Theurge

Problem solved; level up, spend 4 TU's and 100xlevel gold after the new LGCS 597 comes out, and you get the PHB2 Rebuild option which lets you change your "selectable class features."

Presto, new Domains.

two issues

- current rules .. it would need to be a PC as atonement is not NPC castable under 596

- the sidebar in the retraining section of PHB II pretty clearly states changing deity is a major event even suggesting a special mission or such is necessary

What if you dont change the deity, you just change to another of his domains ?
solbergb

That's an option you are allowed with no fanfare.

Level up, pay the cost, get the domain.

that seems to count as a class feature and is OK under retraining.

If atonement becomes available in the new LGCS and the Deities Document ruling allowing you to change deities after an atonement stay valid changing deities will also become straightforward .. which will be a good thing.

The atonement use that is legal in the new LGCS is only for no xp cost uses, i.e. non-willful acts. That would not include changing deities.

So how can divine casters change deity? As someone who's done this I'm kinda interested to know... I just got an atonement by some high level Pholtans whom were specifically listed in a module.

And I didn't realise there were different flavours of atonement...

I'm interested also... I recently ran into NPCs of a different faith who seemed to be bang on with the beliefs of my cleric, and am considering atoning to this new faith (Rao - my character is a pacifist, after all!). Is there a way to do this by the letter of the rules, other than becoming ex-cleric5 of X/cleric2 of Y?

You need an atonement, an XP costing atonement. This will likely have to be setup through your Triad and the NPC will make you go on some sort of quest to prove you deserve the atonement and really represent the ideals of their god.

thanks Britt !!

though it seems to me if you are asking someone to write a special mission just so you can change deities you would want a good reason for the change :)

one other question .. what about Bright Sands clerics .. do you simply contact the player's triad ?

also .. this is important information shouldn't it be spelled out more clearly somewhere ????

For some reason, Stern Alia and Kelanen are favorites.
Oh and, on one occasion, Erythnul. Ofcourse the requirements for the last one required yout to retire your PC. But hey, it WAS free of charge.
