| amnuxoll04-13-07, 07:03 AM | I tried this query out on Infiinite Monkeys and the cowards ignored it. ;) What happens when a Spellsword uses his Channel Spell ability with the Whirling Blade spell? Specifically: 1. Does it really grant an extra "attack" as it would seem to do? 2. If the answer to #1 is "yes" is there any restriction on what weapon is used for the focus of the spell? In other words, can the spellsword channel a whirling blade spell using a dagger into a flail? Or must the spellsword use the same weapon as both the target of channeling and the focus of the spell? 3. If the answer to #1 is "yes" does the extra attack require another attack roll on the target? :AMN: |

If the answer to #1 is "yes" does the extra attack require another attack roll on the target? :AMN: So, to clarify, because I didn't get what you were asking at first, the scenario is a spellsword using channel spell to put whirling blade into his melee weapon, and then casting whirling blade, flinging the weapon along a line, which would cause the whirling blade spell stored in the weapon to discharge against the first target it hits, but only affecting that target? It does indeed appear to give you an extra attack against one opponent you strike, though at the cost of a 2nd level spell slot...like a pseudo-ranged full attack... For question 2, I would assume the extra attack would have to be the weapon that the whirling blade spell was stored in. I don't have any RAW to support this, but it feels right and makes sense to me at least. For #3, it's kinda fuzzy...but if you wouldn't need an to make an attack with a ray channeled into the weapon, I don't see why you would need one for a channeled whirling blade either...but on the other hand, if no attack roll is made, then there is no chance of critting either... This ALMOST makes a 10th level Spellsword worthwhile, with the ability to channel 2 spells at once...2 whirling blades channeled, and then cast whirling blade, so the first guy you hit effectively gets hit 3 times at once... |
| Alpha_Nerd04-13-07, 01:16 PM | Edit: Forgot channel spell only affected the target of the attack no matter the area. Whoopsies. |

| KarmaInferno04-13-07, 09:52 PM | I've seen one sculpted into a Fireball-size shape. The caster was heavily feat-ed and specialized in doing horrifying damage with the weapon to begin with. I think his minimum damage from a successful hit already forced massive damage saves. Being able to do it to everyone in an area effect attack was just wrong -karma |

| Haro04-15-07, 10:20 PM | There is a Barbarian/Sorceror/Dragon Disciple/Spellsword going around that casts the spell and sculpts a full power attack, keen, wounding, falchion that has a sonic orb channelled into it. Think 20ft burst and 4x10ft cubes for maximum effect. Think that's cheesy? Imagine it when wraithstrike was legal...they were all touch attacks! The big problem with whirling blade is that it only hits enemies, not allies in the affected area. Joe |
| jstorrie04-15-07, 11:22 PM | Well, he oughtn't be; the above poster is right. Sculpt Spell only works on Area spells, not Effect spells. It's pretty clear. |
| KarmaInferno04-16-07, 10:45 AM | Yeah, just re-checked the spell. Same issue occurs with Fireburst. Not sculptable. I wasn't familiar with the spell, and I guess the GM wasn't either. I don't remember at all the guy who did this at that game to let him know it doesn't work, either. Ah well. -karma |
| katrick04-17-07, 04:24 PM | what if it's a Spell storing sword Can of worms anyone, or does it teaar a hole in the time space continuom? we call him skole but some call him Jessie katrick |
| cycloptic_squirrel04-17-07, 09:05 PM | what if it's a Spell storing sword The DM throws a book at you. :gah: A spellstoring weapon can only hold a targeted spell. |
| Timlagor04-18-07, 10:27 AM | ..and the stored spell only goes off once (no matter what you try to do with it) |
| katrick04-19-07, 12:08 AM | if you make it Spell Storing twice or thrice do they all go of at once or once per hit? I seem to recall it goes off when you say, so you could drill all the minions with normal attacks and then have the spells go off on the Cleric\Wiz at the back. Katrick |
| Timlagor04-19-07, 10:05 PM | you would be right.. but you can't have multples of the same enchantment on a weapon. |
| katrick04-20-07, 04:49 PM | even it has diferent effacts? katrick |
| katrick04-20-07, 04:51 PM | sorry my computer had a prolapse ( lag sometimes it hurts being Downunder) katrick |
| Timlagor04-20-07, 09:30 PM | even it has diferent effacts? katrick I'm pretty sure there's a specific rule to that effect in the DMG (it came up in another thread) ..feel free to check ;) |
