| Loignar02-24-07, 09:11 PM | I guess this might be better answered in the general D&D forums, but I wanted to be sure LG rules matched also. Can you make an item such as a Morning Star that does bludgeon and peirce damage in a combo cold iron/silver? The idea being the spikes are silver and the ball is cold iron or vice-versa. |

No. You can make each end of a double weapon one and the other, but not a single weapon. And you can't make any weapon both at the same time. |
| katrick02-25-07, 10:54 AM | you can apply silversheen to a cold iron mace |

| Herrbard02-25-07, 11:25 AM | what book can I find silversheen in? The DMG. 250 gp a pop. |
| Loignar02-25-07, 12:22 PM | The DMG. 250 gp a pop. Hmm, I can't seem to find silversheen. Is it a temporary oil that costs 2.5 times as much as making a one handed weapon permanently alchemy silver? |
| Herrbard02-25-07, 12:33 PM | Hmm, I can't seem to find silversheen. Is it a temporary oil that costs 2.5 times as much as making a one handed weapon permanently alchemy silver? DMG page 266. It is an oil that is applied to a melee weapon or 20 pieces of ammunition. It lasts for 1 hour; however, the silversheen replaces any other special material that the weapon is made out of. So, your cold iron morningstar becomes an alchemical silver morningstar for 1 hour. I don't understand the 2.5 times question. We are in LG, not Xen'drik, here! ;) |

| Herrbard02-25-07, 12:52 PM | Thanks, I kept missing that somehow. About the cost, isn't alchemy silver the cost listed in DMG p285? Now I see what you are asking. Yes, page 285 is correct. So you can make a silver weapon for the normal cost plus 90 gp. (98 gp for a silver morningstar, 398 gp for a masterwork silver mornigstar, and 2398 gp for a +1 silver morngstar.) However, the silversheen allows you to apply it to another weapon you already own, so that cold iron morningstar can be a silver morningstar for an hour, without buyng 2 weapons. The real cost benifit happens when you turn a magic weapon silver, and you don't have to have two different material weapons. |

I guess it is reasonably priced for magic weapons, but that price is way too high to be practical in regards to standard or even masterwork weapons. Anywho, I guess I will just stick to the 2 seperate weapons. Thanks for the input. |
| Arvagor02-25-07, 02:50 PM | I guess it is reasonably priced for magic weapons, but that price is way too high to be practical in regards to standard or even masterwork weapons. How so? You'll eventually need to invest in a silver weapon anyway (IMO), so the MW silver morningstar is actually a very good choice. Natural progression is as follows Buy masterwork morningstar (308 gp); side effect is you now have a weapon that does bludgeoning and piercing Add alchemical silver to it (+90 gp) Enchant it to +1 (+2000 gp) Add "sacred" (+1 cost, +6000 gp) or "holy" (+2 cost, +16000 gp) or enhancements at first opportunity (i.e., when you gain access) End result is, you now have a weapon that gets through a lot of the DRs out there -- bludgeoning, piercing, silver, magic, good -- and can be used by almost anyone in the party (with the exception of druids, monks, and wizards, who have better things to do that get into melee combat with creatures with DR) |
| bhale18702-25-07, 03:12 PM | yes but you could do those enchanments on a cold iron or adamantine weapon and buy the silversheen for 250gp a shot rather than buying multiple magic weapons of different base metals |
| Arvagor02-25-07, 04:42 PM | Adamantine access is spotty at best. And yes, you could apply silversheen to a cold iron weapon, but the base cost of your weapon is going to be more, and the price to enchant cold iron is expensive -- an additional 2000gp each time you enchant it. So using the weapon I described above, your minimum cost is 10308 gp (+1, sacred, cold iron), presuming you enchanted it to +1 and sacred at the same time (12308 gp if separate). Plus 250gp for every vial of silversheen you use (presuming you gain access, since it is not Open access to purchase). Versus 8398 gp for (+1, sacred, silver), the difference leaving you 1910 gp to spend buying oil of magic weapon (at only 50gp and Open access) to apply to your normal 16 gp cold iron morningstar ;) ... Or you could simply hope and pray for access to the shadow striking enhancement (from Tome of Magic) which allows the weapon to overcome any type of DR... |
| Mortepierre02-26-07, 04:05 AM | It's worth pointing out, though, that applying silversheen to a cold iron weapon means not being able to use that weapon to overcome X/cold iron DR (as long as the sheen is "active", that is). The description of silversheen confirms this: It will give the weapon the properties of alchemical silver for 1 hour, replacing the properties of any other special material it might have This is the proverbial case where you can't have your cake and eat it too. |

| frupton02-27-07, 01:07 AM | By the way, what does it cost to buy a masterwork cold iron weapon? Masterwork says +300 and cold iron says double. Does that mean a mwk cold iron long sword costs 330gp, or 630gp? |

Does that mean a mwk cold iron long sword costs 330gp, or 630gp? 330g. (DMG p. 284) "For example, a +2 longsword made of cold iron would cost 10,330gp, because the price double for the longsword itself (15gp to 30gp), the +2 enhancement bonus cost 8,000gp, and enhancing cold iron costs an additional 2,000gp. (the price includes 300gp for the masterwork component)." |

| Gallaway02-27-07, 02:28 AM | Silversheen is NOT good value for money when applied to a plain or magic +1 weapon. In those cases you are far better off with a spare silver weapon and applying oil of magic weapon to it for 50gc. Where silversheen comes into its own is when you already have a +2 thundering keen great axe but its cold iron and you are fighting vampires. |
| jstorrie02-27-07, 05:01 AM | Generally speaking for my fighter types I aim for: adamantine, good magical main weapon cold iron, magical armor spikes silvered, magical spiked gauntlets and later on, an adamantine, magical morningstar (preferably good) for golems, with silversheen on hand for silver/bludgeoning undead (though I've never seen one.) Starmetal is also decent, and counterintuitively seems best when you're low level and short on cash. +2000 over the cost of adamantine is a money-saver when you can't afford backup magical cold iron or silver, and you absolutely must pierce dr 5 or 10 on weird outsiders. That +1d6 only eats up an effective dr 3.5, but it helps, and starmetal seems the most common of the splatbook materials. |
