But then I get confused, do I pay $2000 for this, or is it treated as a plus 2 upgrade because I already have a +1, and then do I pay $8000 or is it the difference between +1 and +2, therefore $8000 - $2000 = $6000. The AR does say "...Available to you Frost Weapon Enhancement. You now have access to this weapon enhancement and may apply it to as many weapons as you wish. You must however pay full price to upgrade your weapon(s)" |

While were on the topic, what about silver do you need access granting that? Any other weapon "metal"s we need access to? |
| zigspatty10-01-06, 08:47 PM | Frost is calculated as adding an additional +1 to your weapon. Your weapon is already +1, so +1 (enhancement) +1 (Frost) = +2, or 8,000 gp cost. That's what it would cost you to buy a +1 weapon of Frost, if you were to find such a weapon in the lower items found section of an AR Since you've already paid 2,000 for the +1, you'll only need to spend 6,000 to upgrade it to +2 equivalent. You can do this because you've been given access to the frost enhancement through some sort of favor in the upper box on your AR. Keep in mind that although your weapon cost the same as a +2 weapon, if you should meet a critter with DR +2, your weapon only has a +1 enhancement. Patty |

I think DR/+2 went the way of the dodo with 3.5, but I may be mistaken. Are there any DR/magic critters out there that still require something other than +1? David |

Any other weapon "metal"s we need access to? Cold iron is a dmg material you can make any weapon out of. It bypasses the damage reduction of creatures with DR xx/cold iron (mainly fey). It is relatively cheap to make a weapon out of cold iron (it doubles the weapon costs). Most archer types stock cold iron arrows instead of normal arrows by default because 2gc vs 1gc for 20 arrows is negligible extra cost. The downside costs 2000 gc extra each time you wish to enchant an item. As a consequence if you are enchanting a cold iron weapon with several enhancements you are better off doing all the enhancements at the same time so you only get hit for 2000 gc just once. Lower level characters often carry a cold iron version of a weapon and an oil of magic weapon (50 gc) so they can enchant it "on the fly" if need be and put off enchanting it until they can do several enchantments at teh same time. |

This is because bonus damage is doubled (tripled with spirited charge) with a mounted lance charge. While extra damage dice are not increased at all. Extra die of damage means 3.5 more damage, that many creatures are immune to, and that won't help pierce DR. Most characters who own a lance will have spirited charge and/or power attack, but even without them the extra plus is better. With spirited charge and power attack (power attacking for 1) a +2 lance does 9 extra damage over a +1 lance, while the frost lance does 3.5 extra damage. Both have the same chance to hit. With just spirited charge the +2 lance does 3 extra damage (compared to 3.5) but with a +1 better chance to hit. With just power attack the +2 lance does 6 extra damage (power attacking for 1) compared to 3.5 with the +1 frost lance. Both have the same chance of hitting. With neither power attack or spirited charge the +2 lance still does 2 extra damage with a +1 bonus to hit, compared to 3.5 extra damage with no bonus. Plenty of creatures can't take cold damage, but everything can take lance damage, so the +2 lance is superior to the +1 frost lance even if you don't have power attack or spirited charge. |
| budleiser10-02-06, 04:45 PM | Oh I understand your points with triple damage and extra +1 hit. But if im ever off the mount/cant charge then an extra D6 is handy. Spellstore and Merciful enhancements have peeked my interest more then frost has, but now I understand the $ part. |

None that I have seen. The DR/magic vs. DR/epic distinction seems to be the only case where the plusses matter these days. |
