Hi all,

So, most of us know this feat is next to useless in LG, because nobody else will ever have it. The exception is, of course, Mages of the Arcane Order.

Anyway, one of my friends has a character who is now a Mage of the Arcane Order, and managed to find a Rod of Lesser Cooperative Spell on an AR (and of course, purchased it). My question is how exactly does this feat work? The first part of the feat is fairly straightforward; the second part is rather ambiguous.

I think how it's supposed to work is as follows:
Arcane 1 walks up to Arcane 2 and readies to cast spell X using the cooperative spell feat.
Arcane 2's initiative comes up, and he casts spell X using the cooperative spell feat.
Two spells go off; each caster gets a +2 boost to the DC of their spell, and a +1 bonus to any Spell Resistance checks that are necessary.

The "Special" part of the feat indicates that either: only one spell goes off, _or_ multiple spells go off using the biggest save DC+whatever bonuses come from the use of this feat and SR checks are made by whoever has the biggest bonus to the roll.

The other thing about this feat is that two sorcerors technically can't use it; the first has to "ready" to cast the cooperative spell, and you can't ready a full round action (because it's a metamagicked spell).

So, what does the caucus have to say about this feat?

Thanks,

I have judged when this feat was in use and the people using it only had one spell go off and I think that is how it should be used. Having more than one spell go off with higher DCs on both seems overpowered to me. In essence you can have a sub-par caster take advantage of a more powerful casters ability scores by use of this feat. In that sense you are using both caster's spell slots for a combined number of the most powerful spells.

Also, two sorcerers could do it, one of them would just need a feat which allowed him/her to cast a metamagiced spell spontaneously.

in general the feat is quite useless - unless one has a really big group of low level casters supporting one high level caster.

and yes, it seems that only one spell is going of - *shudder* - what a waste of magic energy :P

without being a prerequisite for "mage of the arcane order" my wizard wouldn't give it a second look ;) and even then, he will take it at the last possible chance.

at least the given example indicates that sorcerers are allowed to use this metamagic feat as a readied action even when it normally would push the spell to a full round action.

Another way is to begin casting a full-round spell in one round and then ready the finish full-round action in the next round. Horrible tactics as it gives everyone a chance to interrupt it and it takes two standard actions in two separate rounds, but it is possible.

Having only one spell go off makes the feat almost entirely useless. You are better off casting both spells separately in all but highly contrived situations.

I agree James... and such highly contrived situations require far more characters than are in a party.

COHORT
GISH
etc..
depending upon party composition and spell selction everyone can use this Rod, many spells cross classes, this rod allows anyone who can cast the spell to add to the DC of the primary caster.
Otherwise you need the feat.
Can anyone say Cleric Mob.
