How does one calculate the doubled cost for size Large weapons? The Player's Handbook says: "This cost is the same for a Small or Medium version of the weapon. A Large version costs twice the listed price." PHB, page 114.

Presumably things like "masterwork" aren't doubled (per the FAQ's similar ruling for Large armor), but what about the strength rating for "Mighty" composite longbows, which is normally an extra 100gp per point of strength bonus?

For example, the price for a masterwork (+300gp) medium composite longbow (+100gp) with a strength rating of 4 (+400gp) is 800gp. Would a masterwork Large composite longbow with a strength rating of 4 be 900gp or 1300gp?

The bonus for strength is a flat fee at the end. You would double the cost of the bow's base cost, then add extras like masterwork and strength bonus.

Is there any support for this in the rules? I can find exceptions to the doubling rule, but only for masterwork and magical enhancements ("The cost of the masterwork quality and any magical enhancement remains the same", DMG p. 223). Why do you feel the strength rating would be similarly exempt from the rule?

Why would it? I realize that the rules for some rules items can be in different places and it can be a bit annoying to find a reference but I'd go with the flat price until you find something to the contrary.

Why would it?

Well, if the exceptions specifically mention just two qualities which are exempt, wouldn't the logical assumption be that the doubling rule applies to everything else? Everything not specifically listed as an exception?

Masterwork and magic enhancements make sense to be mentioned together because they are directly connected to each other. The strength bonus of a mighty composite isn't directly connected to either.

The simplest answer is that it doesn't increase because it doesn't say it does and there isn't text anywhere close to the 'mighty' description to indicate it would change the cost.

That's one interpretation. But the fact that the PHB says the price is doubled seems to clearly indicate the opposite; add to this that the DMG has very specific exceptions for just two listed qualities, and I think the result is becoming more obvious. As much as I wish my character's planned purchase of a Large mw comp. longbow (STR 7) wouldn't cost an extra 700gp, it looks more and more like the rules are pretty clear that the price of the strength rating doubles as well.

Anyone else have any ideas? Preferably with support from the rules-as-written?

Just as a nitpick, there is no such thing as "mighty" any more. That's 3.0 terminology.

Now, every composite bow has a strength rating, with the 'base' version having a +0 rating.
