Kembal 01-02-07, 02:26 PM	I know this may be a DM call but I was wondering if anyone would know how to handle a player shooting a bow into a crowded street at a small huminoid weaving between people. This player has such archery feats as Precise shot and Point Blank shot. Would that be a cover % chance with a miss hitting someone else? And how high would that % be? The other is attacking into a grapple. (Swinging a sword at someone engaged in a grapple) I though I had seen this in PHB but I could not find it. I know the two in the grapple are moving around, but you are aiming for a certian person. Would there be a 50/50 chance or slightly higher %? And attacking said person would be Flat footed, correct?
CrystalBlue 01-02-07, 02:40 PM	The ranged question: I would give the little guy 50% concealment at that time. The melee question: The only time you take a 50/50 chance at hitting in grapple is when you're using ranged. Melee is just fine. People in melee lose their dex bonus and are considered flat-footed.

Improved Precise and the guided shot spell ignore all but total cover. Otherwise, it sounds like cover. Normal cover is +4 to AC. The judge can adjudicate that the situation you describe involves more than normal cover and give a greater benefit to AC. Percentage miss is associated with concealment (lack of clear visibility for targetting). Were a judge to identify this as concealment, normal concealment is 20% and can be increased based upon conditions. Rules for cover and concealment are on PH, pages 150-152. There is no penalty for a melee attack into a grapple. Anyone who is in a grapple is denied Dex to AC to anyone outside of the grapple. Ranged attacks _do_ have a chance of hitting either grappler. Rules for cover and concealment are on PH, pages 150-152; the random roll for missile fire into grapple is note three of the AC table. David

Just one other point: in 3E, if the little guy was getting cover from someone standing between him and the archer, it was possible for a shot that missed the little guy (due to the cover bonus) to hit the intervening person. In the 3.5 rules, this doesn't happen. So, no matter if it's cover or concealment, by the 3.5 rules, no, you can't hit an innocent target with a miss.
szwanger 01-02-07, 07:00 PM	The only time you take a 50/50 chance at hitting in grapple is when you're using ranged. A small correction: it isn't 50/50; it's "random". So it's up to the judge to decide what that chance is -- a huge creature grappling a small one, for example, might not be 50-50.
CrystalBlue 01-03-07, 08:51 AM	Correct. Thank you. It has to do with the percentage of how much space is being taken up. A large against medium grapple would be a 25% miss, a huge would be 10%, and something bigger would be 5%
