I had a question about utilizing this feat.

I have access to purchase an Adamantine Battleaxe. Can I craft a +1 Adamantine Battleaxe for 2500 gps or do I need to pay the 3000 for the adamantine weapon and then just 1000 to upgrade it to +1 ?

Or what if I had access to Starmetal at one point could I do the same above ? Or pay the 5000 for the starmetal weapon and then just 1000 to enhance it to +1 ?

And how does enhancing a Cold Iron weapon work. Do you pay half the extra 2000 gps to enchant it ?

To craft a +1 item, you first buy the masterwork item that serves as the material component, then use the crafting feat to make it +1. In the case of your adamantine battleaxe, you buy the adamantine battleaxe for 3010gp, and then craft it to +1 for the cost of 1000gp. Your total cost is 4010gp.

And how does enhancing a Cold Iron weapon work. Do you pay half the extra 2000 gps to enchant it ?

The cost of enchanting a cold iron weapon is twice to normal cost (+1 weapon costs 4000gp instead of 2000gp). Using your battle axe example, you buy a masterwork cold iron battleaxe for 320gp, and then spend 2000gp (1/2 of 4000gp) to craft it to +1. Your total cost is 2320gp.

Ok thanks that is what I was thinking.

I am stuck right now trying to decide if I wish to increase my armor and shield bonus from +1 to +2 on each. Or craft a +1 Sacred Battle Axe

What's the character, and what's the book source for Sacred?

Sacred is from Libris Mortis. And I am a, what I like to call Combat Medic. Cleric 5 / Fighter one. He tanks alot and is in combat quite often.

I can imrpove my AC to 24 Normal (26 When I dont move or only move 5') or I can craft that Battleaxe

It might be moot for another level unless you have Practiced Spellcaster. You need to have CL6 in order to upgrade the items to +2. Sacred's doable, though.

Yeah did not think about that. Never crafted anything before. Looks like I save the money until I hit 7th

Sacred is a really, really good weapon enhancement. Potentially more cost-effective than Holy. I'd consider it, so long as you've already picked up your Str, Dex, and Con +2 items, a Vest of Resistance +1, good consumables and such.

Your number might be correct but you are wrong about the basic rule.

Enchanting a CI weapon costs an extra 2000gp each time you enchant it (MIC has a typo).
NB this means that a +4 CI weapon may have cost a different amount to craft depending on how many steps it was enchanted in.

I'm not certain whether the 2000gp premium is reduced for Crafters.

Thanks for the correction. I must have extended double cost for the base weapon to double cost for the magic portion as well. It isn't clear to me whether the extra 2000gp is per enchantment or a one time charge if enchanted, partciularly since it includes the masterwork charge.

It's "per time you upgrade the magic on the weapon".

EXAMPLE:
Suppose you have a MW CI Longsword and are paying an NPC to upgrade it for you.

1) You can upgrade it to +4 all at once for: 32,000 + 2,000 = 34,000gp

2a) You can upgrade it to +1 for: 2k+2k = 4k
2b) You can then upgrade it again to +2 for: 6k+2k=8k
2c) ..and then to +4 for 24k+2k =26k
..making a total cost of 26k+8k+4k = 38k for the same item.

So for instance:

Masterwork Cold Iron Battleaxe

Upgrade to +1 and Sacred at the same time = 2000 (+1) + 6000 (Sacred) + 2000 (Cold Iron) = 10,000 gps

So is that 5,000 gps or is it 6,000 gps ?????

It's "per time you upgrade the magic on the weapon".

Ah, I see this is clearly spelled out in the FAQ.

So for instance:

Upgrade to +1 and Sacred at the same time = 2000 (+1) + 6000 (Sacred) + 2000 (Cold Iron) = 10,000 gps

So is that 5,000 gps or is it 6,000 gps ?????

Or does it cost:

Upgrade to +1 = 2,000 (+1) + 2,000 (Cold Iron) = 4,000
Upgrade to Sacred = 6,000 (Sacred) + 2,000 (Cold Iron) = 8,000

Total = 12,000 gp

Since you aren't allowed to upgrade a weapon with a special ability unless it has a +1 enchantment on it already?

As far as I know that is correct.

Cannot craft everything at once as stuff needs to be a +1 weapon first.

E.g: cannot save on the 2,000GP by crafting a +1 flaming Greatsword, because it needs to be crafted to +1 BEFORE it can take the flaming ability.

Once it was +1 I think you could add them all at once...

Now I'm confused. The DMG p. 221 says, "A weapon with a special ability must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus." The same sentence occurs on p. 223. Page 286 says, "A magic weapon must have at least a +1 enchantment bonus to have any of the abilities listed on Table 7-14 or Table 7-15."

The first sentence does not say, "A weapon with a special abilty must first have had a +1 enhancement bonus." The second sentence does noy say, "A magic weapon must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus to acquire any of the abilities ...."

They don't say that the special ability has to be priced as an upgrade, or that it can't be crafted into a weapon at the same time as the (required) enhancement bonus. The DMG just says that things like merely keen rapiers, as opposed to +1 keen rapiers, are impossible.

What am I missing? Where does the 'before' come from?

Upgrade to +1 = 2,000 (+1) + 2,000 (Cold Iron) = 4,000

No this is definitely wrong.
"First" does not mean it has to be a separate session of enhancement.

I don't know whether crafting for yourself allows you to halve the 2000gp CIPremium.
