| Rawveggie10-19-06, 04:22 PM | Hello, So I just took the CWI feat and I have been nosing around for handy things I can craft. Reading the rules for crafting in the DMG it indicates that you can use the assistance of someone else (say a divine caster) to fulfill the prereq's of certain items. Looking to the LGCS it indicates that you can have a scroll for a spell you can't otherwise cast, though you need one for each day of crafting. What it doesn't say is whether or not the scroll itself qualifies as a fill-in for the "someone else" who can use that scroll if you can't. Example, I am a sorcerer who wants to craft some Dust of Tracelessness. I meet the caster level pre-req but do not have Pass without Trace on my spell list. Baring a UMD check for using a scroll of that spell I would need a druid or ranger "friend" (NPC) to use the scroll while I was crafting. Is it presumed that because I purchased the scroll I can find someone to use it or can I not craft such an item at all? Thanks in advance. -Raw |
| _m_10-19-06, 09:03 PM | is dust of tracelessness technically a wonderous item. i would be inclined to think that it more falls into the potion-style items, which i dont think are craftable. though i have dust on my adventure records, with, if it is a wonderous item and you fit the pre reqs, i think that might be enough. |

It's listed on DMG table 7-27, "Minor Wondrous Items", and requires the Craft Wondrous Item feat to manufacture it. As far as the OP's question, you yourself have to either be able to cast the spell yourself, or activate the scroll/wand/whatever (via UMD or class abilities); you cannot rely on NPCs do help you with your crafting. |

Thanks for the reply. Can you let me know where you are getting this information? As far as the DMG is concerned it can be done and the LGCS does not counter that from what I can see. Conservatively I would agree with you but I would like to get a rules quote that can confirm it. -Raw |

I had always been under the impression that there is no cooperative crafting in LG. I spent about 30 minutes looking for it in the LGCS yesterday, and couldn't find it. Does anyone have the reference or the chain of logic? Thx. David |

Though even without a reference my question, in part, is does it really count as "cooperative"? Technically I'm asking an NPC to do it the same way that you could ask an NPC to cast Cure Disease on you if there was a large enough town/city to accomodate one of sufficient level (this is as per the listing of NPC spellcasting in Chapter 7 of the PHB). -Raw |

You're asking the NPC to cooperate with the crafting by providing the prerequisite spell. I think it's pretty clear that it would take an NPC favor to make that happen (if it can happen at all), but I'd like to nail down one PC helping another. David |
| opa10-20-06, 06:29 PM | Well some pertinent facts to the discussion would be that they specifically mention that you can use scrolls, but do not mention that you can use NPC's Also stated in the LGCS is the fact that you cannot get an NPC spellcaster to cast spells that are not on table 6-3 in the LGCS which would significantly narrow the number of pertinent items.. other pertinent facts are that the "person " helping would have to be devoted to the process being there to cast the spells or more accurately lose the spell slots for the pertinent spells while working on the item, which in effect would cost a player time units as well, because he certainly couldn't be doing that and adventuring... At that point a player would have to spend tu's to get nothing, and in my eyes when the LGCS states that a player can't create for another player, that comes close... either way I am pretty sure there is no system in place for that sort of thing it would require an NPC to be just as devoted and I would think that would need AR documentation..... My ruling at a table until the circle clarifies it would probably be you couldnt get a player to help, and if you wanted to get an NPC to help you could only find one in a city you were adventuring in , if you could find one of the appropriate level, and even then you could only get the spells on table 6-3 cast, and you would have to pay for a casting for each day of creation , which I think would run you into more cost than just buying the item in most cases.. -Opa |

However, they can help with repairing destroyed magic items (LGCS pg 45). |

| Rawveggie10-23-06, 04:58 PM | Thank you all for the replies. Sadly, I think you are correct and there is no way my Sorcerer can create Dust of Tracelessness. :( Oh well, thanks for all of the help. -Raw |
