I've just recently gotten access to the benefits of Craft Wondrous Item, so I have read the item creation rules for the first time. My apologies if this is a dumb question:

According to the LGCS, you can use CWI to create items from the DMG . Does this mean that you can't craft wondrous items out of other sources?

Not without seeing it somewhere first.

No apologies necessary. This has been debated in the past. Hopefully the wording will be improved in the next LGCS.

There's a bit of a difference between what the LGCS clearly states and what is common practice IMO. I believe that there may have been wording changes in the past that have generated some confusion. Note the following passage:
"Casters able to puchase items valued over 2,500 gp from approved sources may create those items once the prerequisites are satisfied."

So in my experience, the DMG Tables restriction only applies to the <2501GP and CL+2 rules. So if you find a Vest of Resistance +2, you can CWI it at a later date. However, finding a Vest +2 won't allow you to MIC a Vest+1 or a Vest+3.

Some have said that the DMG Table restriction prevents you from CWI MICing any non-DMG items however. I don't recall the Circle ever chiming in on this one. Ask your Judge and if they are in doubt, you might want to get an email from the Triad.

I believe that you can craft wonderous items from outside the DMG as long as you have access, though you're right, the relevant section of the LGCS seems to indicate otherwise.
