| control freak07-28-07, 10:49 PM | if an item only has spells listed do i need a perticular level other then the spell to craft it? (and LG does use the caster level as a requirment to craft) |
| bitznarf07-29-07, 01:43 AM | By the core rules caster level is not a requirement, the listed one is simply the caster level on an item if you found it randomly. LG does not change this. The only time caster level is a requirement is on those items that specifically require a caster level. Vests/Cloaks of Resistance for example. |
| control freak07-29-07, 11:39 AM | so you have to be 8th to craft stat boosters (scratches head) meh not worth takeing CWI then :( |
| bitznarf07-29-07, 11:48 AM | Umm.. why? Caster level is not a requirement, not in 'normal' D&D, not in LG; unless the item specifically calls it out. Take a look at ioun stones for example. Or a pearl of power. Or the cloak of resistance. The caster level listed in the DMG is simply the default caster level used if someone simply buys/finds the item. Thats it. |
| Timlagor07-29-07, 03:08 PM | so you have to be 8th to craft stat boosters (scratches head) meh not worth takeing CWI then :( 1) How can you possibly get this from the reply? 2) CWI was arguably the best Feat in the game with that requirement when it existed in LG (it applied up to LGCS 597 when it was removed) |
| control freak08-01-07, 12:07 PM | im sorry your right i probably will take it then, even thou it pushes back fearsome necromancy ill just deal with it and take the penalty (i need a MIC sheet right but) i have to get the spells, so id probably retrain so i can cast the spells so i can actualy craft things:P |
| LachlarlanIII08-01-07, 12:21 PM | A good way to put it: Caster level is NOT a requirement to craft an item unless the item specifically mentions needing a certain caster level. Ex: Crafting a +1 Longsword requires the crafter to have caster level 3 because crafting a magic weapon requires a caster level equal to 3 times the enhancement bonus. Whereas, adding Vicious to the same sword would require a caster level high enough to cast Enervation, but requires nothing more. |
| control freak08-01-07, 12:26 PM | thats fine i simply misunderstood that you could cast them issue, so i could go to 3rd level gain the feat and still use it at the end of that AR to make a head band of int? |
| LachlarlanIII08-01-07, 12:33 PM | First, all crafting occurs before an adventure begins. (LGCS, P 15) When you hit 3rd level, you can take CWI as your feat. At the beginning of your next mod, you could craft a Headband/Periapt/Cloak +6, if you can afford it. You cannot however, craft anything that will drop your exp to below the minimum for your current level. |
| control freak08-01-07, 12:36 PM | one last thing for the 1/25 exp thing do you pay 4000/25 for exp or 2000/25 ( as that is half the price) |
| bitznarf08-01-07, 12:40 PM | 4000/25 |
| LachlarlanIII08-01-07, 12:43 PM | one last thing for the 1/25 exp thing do you pay 4000/25 for exp or 2000/25 ( as that is half the price) Expanding on bitznarf, you find the full market value of an item. From there, you divide that number by half, and that is the ammount of gold you will need to spend. You also take the full market value, divide by 25, and that is the exp you need to spend. |
| control freak08-01-07, 05:11 PM | thanks that actualy makes it better then i thought it was just out of curiosity i have been hearing alot about the gold curve, does being ahead of the curve some times make up for playing up? (i have several free mid priced items(between 2-5 thousand) on my cleric) because i dont have any +2 stat items and most of all my money on all my characters are spent in trying to keep them alive (cloke of resistance, and good AC and an ephod) i dont have CWI but all my TU on my cleric are reserved (i started this year but will still be able to play up to both feild of ruin lvl6 to APL8 and hellspike prison lvl 7 to APL 9 without taking half and still running up to level 8) what characters care about it the most, wiz, fighter, cleric? |

A gross gear advantage could make it easier to play up, but I find that the ability to play up easily depends mostly on play skill and build. (in either order) This is because most magical equipment really doesn't give all THAT big of a bonus. You tend to get +1 to this or +2 to that. Due to the way costs scale, crafting generally lets you do something like getting a +5 armor when a non-crafter would have a +3 or +4 armor, for instance. (25k for +5 armor /2 = 12.5k ~ 9k for +3 armor or 16k for +4 armor) If you examine just one item slot, that looks kind of like you took a feat that just gives +1 armor. The real power of crafting feats is using them for multiple slots, where you can get those +1 to +2 shavings repeatedly. Even then, however, those small advantages help but not so much that it will make up for weak builds and/or playing skill. If you can play up, you can play up. If you can't, you can't. A sack of gold either way won't change that for most characters. |
| control freak08-01-07, 05:46 PM | a item that allows me 1 supernatural cure serious/adventure for free as an immediate action and a few other goodies also a sack of gold can give you a +1 vorpal wounding holy sword of end this battle and a +5 armor of heavy fortification and +6 to all stats, and alot more |

But hey ... if your CL11 wizzie actually wants a +1 vorpal wounding holy sword yeah he can make one. |
| CdrcJsn08-02-07, 01:59 AM | Well you would need to be a CL11 wizzie/sorceror to cast the circle of death for the vorpal bit Where does it say you have to be 11th level? I know you need to be able to cast the prerequisite spell (Circle of Death in this case), but I can't find the minimum caster level you're talking about. As far as I know, you can use spell trigger and spell completion items to fulfill the spell requirements (1 charge per day), and you can use those even if you're not level 11. |

Well true .. but "Enhancing a weapon, suit of armor, or shield takes one day for each 1,000 gp in the price of its magical features. " so you would need 200 scrolls at about 2k gc each equals 400,000 gc to do it that way ?? I am not a crafter so someone can correct me on that. CL11 is just the minimum caster level to cast a 6th level spell like Circle of Death. There is also the comment that "Creating a magic weapon has a special prerequisite: The creator’s caster level must be at least three times the enhancement bonus of the weapon. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met. " .. I am not sure what that means in LG. |

Crafting stuff from scrolls or spell trigger items isn't cost effective unless each charge costs less than 500gp each. I was just concerned that my Bard has been cheating all this time crafting stat bonus items using scrolls and UMD. Some enchantments have minimum caster levels as well. Spell Storing for example needs a minimum 12th level caster. Under prereqs it has "creator must be a caster of at least 12th level". So a +2 Spell Storing weapon would still need a 12th level caster even though a +2 weapon normally only requires a 6th level caster. |
| Timlagor08-02-07, 04:10 AM | Frontline characters suffer the most from playing up. The Wealth will lower their AC, Saves and Damage output on top of the problems of low HP and base saves ..back line people are more likely to get away with it in general but playing well and appropriately to the party&APL is more important. |
