Crafting question (stupid but needed) [Archive] - Wizards Community

When I look at the description of what is needed to craft an item, it seems I need to be a certain caster level, have certain spells, and have access to the item (except for the list of open items).

My problem is the caster level of the item. I look under Pearls of Power in the DMG and its caster level is 17th. That's insane! But I see people crafting them all over the place. So...is this the caster level of the time that I need for crafting, or is it just what the item is after creating. Also, if these items are special and you can craft them outside the caster level requirements, then are there other items like this?

Sorry if this seems elementary...but I need to know. Thanks.

Caster level is generally not a prereq. See the DMG errata. Some items are specific exceptions (see cloak of resistance or ioun stone for examples).

To be more accurate, the Open items list are things you already have access to through the LGCS.

Could someone show me this errata or where it is, please?

There is none. Caster level requirements for crafting used to be an LG houserule.

Could someone show me this errata or where it is, please?Follow the Game Rules link on the main D&D webpage.

You need to have all of the errata accessible (or annotate your books) as LG uses the errataed version of the D&D rules (e.g. Scouts need to end up 10' away from their starting point to skirmish, you can't overrun on a charge, CL is not a casting prerequesite and lots and lots of other changes - some small, some very large)

Here is the link to the errata page:

Some three years ago, the last errata for the DMG was released. I believe that the newer printings of these books include the errata.
