Bob_the_Theurge 03-27-06, 12:54 PM	Something rather off that I've noticed. Mostly this is due to WotC's changing of St. Cuthbert to Lawful Neutral, but it is a problem. Cuthbert's got the Destruction domain, but since LG says he is Lawful Good, the third-level spell of this domain (Contagion, Nec[Evil]) cannot be used by his followers. Any chance of an alternate domain spell being named?
kjenks 03-27-06, 01:41 PM	A cleric can prep a lower level domain spell in a higher level slot or use metamagic. For a cleric of St. C, Empower Spell + Inflict Light Wounds would fit nicely in his level 3 domain slot.

Look at these three rules. LG Deities 2.0 === If two alignments are listed for a deity, the first one is the deity's alignment, and the second one (the one in parenthesis) is the most common variant alignment of the deity's worshippers. === And... SRD === Alignment: A cleric’s alignment must be within one step of his deity’s (that is, it may be one step away on either the lawful–chaotic axis or the good–evil axis, but not both). A cleric may not be neutral unless his deity’s alignment is also neutral. === And... SRD === Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells: A cleric can’t cast spells of an alignment opposed to his own or his deity’s (if he has one). Spells associated with particular alignments are indicated by the chaos, evil, good, and law descriptors in their spell descriptions. === The first rule says that St. Cuthbert is LG, so, by the second rule, his clerics can be LN, LG, or NG. But that third rule tells me that even an LN cleric of Cuthbert can't cast [Evil] spells and an NG cleric of Cuthbert can't cast [Chaotic] spells, not because of the cleric's alignment but because of the deity's alignment. So no [Evil] spells for the followers of St. Cuthbert. And that puts a damper on their Destruction domain because the level 3 spell, Contagion, has the [Evil] descriptor. Ah, well. Clerics of St. Cuthbert can fill that domain slot with a lower level spell, a metamagic spell (Empower Spell + Inflict Light Wounds looks inviting) or one of their other domains.
kjenks 04-04-06, 02:30 PM	By the way, that same logic applies to Pholtan Priests of the Ebongleam from The Grand Theocracy of Dimre in the Bandit Kingdoms. No [Evil] spells for you guys, either, even if you are lawful neutral. Pholtus is LG.
Rawveggie 04-05-06, 06:12 PM	Wait, doesn't the second rule you posted say that unless the deity is neutral, the clerics of that deity can't be neutral? Doesn't that mean that clerics of St. Cuthbert can't be LN? -Raw
kjenks 04-05-06, 06:35 PM	Neutral alignment means neutral along both axes, neither lawful nor chaotic, neither good nor evil. So clerics of St. C (who is lawful good) cannot be neutral, but they can be lawful neutral or neutral good.
