Dwarves, full plate and tumble [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-11-07, 08:41 PM It seems the reason non-dwarven PC's cannot tumble in full plate is that heavy armor restricts movement which prohibits tumbling.

However according to the FAQ dwarven movement is not effected by armor citing the example of a dwarf barbarian moving 30' in medium armor.

So CAN a dwarf tumble while wearing heavy armor ?

03-11-07, 08:47 PM It would seem so, unless the fact that your run speed is x3 not x4 counts as reduction of speed...

Tumble doesn't say reduction of BASE speed, just reduction of speed.. but I think it doesn't really matter that much of the wording here, does it?

I will probably give him mithral full plate and his jump synergy will counter some of that check penalty.

Which means with boots of jumping striding goodness I will have a 40' movement dwarf that can tumble quite well in full plate. I have a hunch this character might annoy the purists out there that believe D&D should be an exact remake of Lord of the Rings.

03-11-07, 09:36 PM My L7 gnome bard has more magic items than the entire combined Fellowship. D&D and LotR are very, very, very different...

Tumbling dwarves un-needing of tossing are very fun.

Can a dwarf wearing medium or heavy armor or carrying a medium or heavy load use the Tumble skill?
Yes. Thanks to the dwarven racial ability to move at full speed even when armored or encumbered, the character's speed hasn’t been "reduced by armor, excess equipment, or loot" (Player’s Handbook, page 84), so he's free to use the Tumble skill. Of course, he still suffers an armor check penalty for either the armor or the load (whichever is worse).
