Britt,
I play a human sorcerer who is advancing to level 4 and retraining. Currently his feats (taken at the specified levels) are,

1st - Spell Penetration, Maximize Spell
3rd - Point Blank Shot

My ultimate goal is now to be able to have Point Blank AND precise Shot. Can I retrain one of my first level feats to be Point Blank Shot? There is nothing I can find in the PHB that says that you cannot have this feat twice (the effects would just not stack). Although specific feats say "You may take this feat twice" nothing suggests that you cannot have a feat twice without this specification, and there is nothing specific about it in the PHBII. If I do take it, what would happen to my 3rd Level PBS? I know you can't take feat selections that would make later choices illegal...

Thanks
Richard

P.S. I bet that the reason why no one says you may take this feat twice is because in the original game, there would have been no reason to do so.

POINT BLANK SHOT [GENERAL]
You are skilled at making well-placed shots with ranged weapons at close range.
Benefit: You get a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet.
Special: A fighter may select Point Blank Shot as one of his fighter bonus feats.

In the current 3.5 edition of the game, there is no reason to take point blank shot more than once, either. Point blank shot applies to ALL ranged weapons and ONLY to ranged weapons. If you take it twice, then one of those slots is pretty much wasted until it can be retrained. But I've seen no rules to prevent wasting your feats. (Heck, Maximize is pretty much wasted until your sorcerer is 8th level anyway...)

I suppose your reasoning is that you cannot take precise as one of your first level feats (because you did not have point blank then). So at 5th level, you could retrain Maximize into PBS, and at 6th, retrain PBS into Precise Shot.
Personally, I'd just take Precise as the 6th level feat.

Core rules issue, so I can't say. I would do what Patty says and just take Precise at 6th level.

I e-mailed CustServ about a similar issue (will be retraining away a bonus feat I need when I take a racial sub level), and was told that unless the feat specifically says you can take it multiple times, you cannot.

CustServ is not binding in LG, but I wouldn't take the risk of being told at a con you have an illegal character.

With the current rulings, your stuck with just those feats, you can't have pointblank shot twice. In a home campaign I'd just tell you to swap out maximize for point blank and point blank to precise shot. You could change pointblank shot to something else this level, then change one of your first level feats to point blank shot next level, and then change whatever you chose to replace pointblank shot with precise shot... but that would take a couple more levels obviously... If you do, then replacing pointblank shot with weapon focus(ray) may be a good choice until you gain more levels, it won't help with non-ray weapons though...

I would point out that according to Complete Arcane, it is weapon Focus (ranged spell) and applies to all ranged spells.

Level 4, swap point blank shot for something useful right now (imp init, great fortitude, improved toughness, weapon focus (ray) whatever. It only has to be useful for a couple levels)

level 5 swap maximize spell for point blank shot

Level 6 swap the L3 feat for precise shot.

or, as others have suggested, save the cash and just take precise at L6. The only reason to do the above retrain juggle is if you have plans for your L6 feat slot
