How would a player or DM go about having a character feign death? Simple opposed bluff/sense motive checks? Any modifers? Feats? Rules?

Thanks!

That is how it has been played in mods that I have been in - saved my life too. Fortunately falling over is a free action.

If characters ask, "Is he dead?", I let them make an easy heal check (which takes a standard action) if next to them to determine if the character is alive, unconscious, or dead.

Reasonably, it seems it would be a bluff check opposed by either sense motive or heal at the opposer's option. Or maybe they could make a bluff check to modify the heal check required...since the best you could really do is hold your breath and try and slow your heartbeat, and stay as still as possible...It's a pretty gray area...and it's also a matter of if, in the heat of battle, any of the baddies are actually concerned about the exact status of a party member who is on the ground and apparently not moving...Now feigning death to avoid being killed AFTER the battle would be a bit trickier...

Eh, if the GM is allowing this sort of trick at all, they're being very generous. You really need to fall over reactively to make it believable, and going prone is not usually something you can do out of turn. I have seen it done (twice to the benefit of my PCs), and I'll usually allow it myself if I think the party badly needs the help, but it's not really permitted by the rules as written. The exception is the case where someone casts a spell / makes an attack and then falls prone (faking having been on 0HP and then having taken a strenuous action): in that case, I would happily let the PC make a Bluff check and not consider it softballing, and I would also apply the "target wants to believe you" bonus to their check.

Note that if I'm DMing and you want to "bluff" falling unconscious from being hit, I will take my cleave attack ;-)

The only time I remember someone in my party trying to do it was against an assassin vine that had them grappled. GM let him go limp on the vine's action, then opposed Bluff vs Sense Motive. Vine dropped him and he took no action until the vine was dead.

The only time I've encountered it in an LG module was one of the bad guys (evil cleric in an Iuz module) playing dead before my tiger companion ripped him to shreds. The tiger rolled poorly on a sense motive and turned on the next foe, letting the cleric escape. Of course, we already had one dead PC and another had gone negative, so we didn't argue when the cleric escaped with some of our treasure. (It was a weak table which wanted to play APL 10, but ended up APL 12 when a sixth player was sent to the table).
