| Ramacass02-22-07, 08:09 AM | Is a resist energy (fire) spell a "fire" spell for purposes of a reserve feat. The fire domain lists it's third level spell as resist energy and then notes at the bottom that it can only be cast as a fire spell. However in the spells description it does not list a fire descriptor. Thanks |
| Redfist02-22-07, 09:48 AM | Resist Energy is an Abjuration spell with no subtype. I'd say no. |

I'm just wondering why they would put an * next to it on a table and then list that it can only be cast as a fire spell if in fact it can not be cast as a fire spell. That either means that something was left out in the spell description or the note below the entry is wrong. I'm just wondering which is which. Is there an errata? does anyone know? |

Well I'm gonna guess that the intent is that you can only use the fire domain resist energy to cast resist energy (fire). The only thing is that the abjuration itself doesn't have the fire descriptor regardless of the energy type resisted... |

| Mortepierre02-23-07, 11:45 AM | There is nothing in the description of the Abjuration school or of the Resist Energy spell to support that statement, unfortunately. |
| AnexCDC02-23-07, 12:56 PM | When I looked into this matter, I found that it is not a fire spell. The wording of the reserve feats is that you have to have the ability to cast a fire spell not have it prepared. This means that instead of Resist Energy as a general blanket spell for reserve feats you can use Summon Monster III (or a higher level Summon Monster since you can still summon the lower level summons) since Summon Monster specificly says the spell takes on the types of the monster that is being summoned. Thus with Elemental, Small (Any) on the list of options for SM III you can cast it as a fire spell thus it qualifies for reserve feats. Though if i remember correctly it has different wording for prepared casters and spontanous casters, and I do not have the book with me at the moment to double check. When I get home I'll check it again to make sure that it works for prepared as well as spontanous. |

In the description of reserve feats, it explicitly states that spells that do not have a descriptor until cast (such as teh summon monster spells) can't be used to gain the primary benefit of a reserve feat. On the other hand there is a spell compendium spell that would work well for this. Energy Spheres has all energy descriptorsm and therefore could be used to power all of the energy based reserve feats. |
