One of my LG characters recently gained access to a trained giant owl as a mount. According to the MM, giant owls have Int 10 and can speak and understand Common and Sylvan. My question is this: does my PC have to teach the owl tricks like a regular non-intelligent animal, or is it able to follow spoken requests? Common sense dictates the latter, but my understanding of the animal rules in the LGCS suggests otherwise. Can anyone help?

Giant Owls are magical beasts, not animals. So you should be able to communicate with and request from the owl anything that a 10 Int character would be able to understand and accomplish.

"Animals" have an intelligence of 1 or 2 and can learn 3 tricks per point of intelligence (unless they're companion animals which can learn a few more).

Giant Owls are "Magical Beasts" and have an intelligence of 10 along with the ability to speak common and sylvan. They can do far more than simple tricks - just ask them nicely and give them a good reason to do it. It's quite possible that they will be cleverer than some of your fellow party members.

Smarter *and* wiser than my paladin...but at least my paladin's prettier. ;) :D
