My wizard is about to take a level of Ruathar (whenever I get around to making the changes to his character sheet), and I'm curious if the +1 Longsword he'll gain from the Gift of the Elves text must be steel -- or if it can be silver or cold iron -- or even if it could be another material to which my wizard has access (dragonfang, pearlsteel, etc.).

Does anybody know?

Thanks.

RAW would suggest that it is steel and can be nothing else; otherwise, the text would say +1 silver longsword, or +1 cold iron longsword, etc. In shouldn't necessarily be anything you have access to, because that's your access, not the elves...

This is one of those questions where I wonder why the question is being asked.

RoW is extremely specific about what you get - why do you think you can get something else? I have my suspicions but I'll wait until we get an answer. :)

Most of the time you get a pat on the back and a cookie. A PrC that gives you a weapon is rare who cares what its made of.

Silver is a special case in that it can be applied afterwards but I'm not sure how the Elves would feel about that.

Maybe they were aquatic, or some other odd type, of elves.

Well seeing as you can sell the gift and it doesn't automatically remove the benefits of the PrC (although there is a strong hint for the DM that it might) I'd say that silvering the sword isn't a horrible offense.

The gift is recorded on your MIL at a cost of 0gp. You can sell the gift, but only for a price of 0gp.

Yes, but if you re-read it - in context - you'll rapidly realize that you've missed the point.

No, I didn't, but thank you for presuming. I may not have commented on the point you made. It doesn't follow that I missed it.

You're welcome. If you didn't miss the point, it was at least completely irrelevant.

All right, thanks to those who responded to the original question. I think we've gotten about all the constructive discussion we're going to get out of this thread. I hope it now rests in peace.
