| Rerednaw04-23-07, 01:28 PM | I was reading up on this and wanted some clarification. When you are pinned (and not doing the pinning) can you cast a spell? Where is the table for unarmed damage for creatures by size? I can find damage for S, M, and L, but not other sizes. The weapon size table pattern would imply Huge = 1d6, Gargantuan = 1d8, etc... Does dealing damage on the AoO mean that the attacker has to take some damage? As opposed to a hit that doesn't bypass DR. Thanks. |
| King Kashue04-23-07, 01:41 PM | I was reading up on this and wanted some clarification. When you are pinned (and not doing the pinning) can you cast a spell? You can cast a spell without somatic, material (unless it was in your hand prior to the grapple) and (usually, since covering the mouth is a free action) verbal components. Which basically means you can try to cast quicken spells, unless you've got still silent eschewed materials. You can also use supernatural or spell like abilities. Spell-like and spells require a concentration check of 20+spell level. Where is the table for unarmed damage for creatures by size? I can find damage for S, M, and L, but not other sizes. The weapon size table pattern would imply Huge = 1d6, Gargantuan = 1d8, etc... I believe the DMG, around page 20 gives the scaling for damage dice and size. I don't have my DMG with me atm though... Does dealing damage on the AoO mean that the attacker has to take some damage? As opposed to a hit that doesn't bypass DR. For concentration checks? Yes. For specific abilities, it would be case by case, but I can't think of any where it wouldn't be. Dealing damage means just that, dealing damage. 5 points of damage against DR 10 doesn't deal any damage to the critter... |

I'm also fairly certain that Quickened Spells still have their various components. I think it's also theoretically possible to get a material component out while grappled (but not pinned) but in practice I've never known it to be worthwhile (you'd use that grapple check to escape) ...I suppose some sort of Grapping Gish might do so. I think you may also be limitted to spells that take a Standard Action or less (making it hard for Sorcerors to use Still and Silent) Dealing damage does indeed require that HP be actually lost for this purpose. For things like applying Sneak Attack dice it is not necessary that DR be overcome already. |

Actually, the grappling articles used to be faulty, but were recently cleaned up quite a bit. They're a good source of clarification. Since fetching a spell component takes no grapple check, there's no chance of wasting an escape roll. It simply takes a full-round action. |
