| Puggle Halfwine01-06-07, 04:21 AM | Hey guys, I'm looking to kit out a warrior-type character with high dexterity with very high dexterity with some armour. What's the armour with the highest max dex? Padded is the best from the PHB, but is there some other made of wierd and wonderful materials, enchantments, etc? |
| Arvagor01-06-07, 11:28 AM | I've never seen any AC/Dex bonus combo greater than 10 (in un-magicked armor), though its possible some exists. Mithral shirt is, of course, the sweet spot -- decent AC early while letting you retain a decent amount of Dex even after you've passed the max Dex bonus. The GenCon special (retired now), granted access to shadow silk leather (from Tome of Magic), which is +2 AC, +8 Max Dex; shadow silk padded is +1 AC, +10 Max Dex. Of Course, there's also celestial armor -- chain that's +8 AC, +8 Max Dex -- I have access and could afford it, but I'm not keen on the armor check penalty of -2 ... |
| Mommy was an Orc01-06-07, 05:41 PM | Bracers of Armor. Unlimited max ac. Greater Mage Armor is cheaper, though. |
| Lomiat01-06-07, 06:46 PM | If you take an elf character with a 20 starting DEX; bump it to 23 at levels 4, 8 and 12; give the PC Gloves of Dex +6; and take Wildrunner for a Primal Scream +6 to DEX--you can get the PC's Dex up to 35, or +12. Only Mage Armor or Bracers of Armor allow you to use your Dex. Realistically, you don't take 20 DEX to start, but 18 starting's fair game, giving you +11 with Primal Scream later on--still +3 DEX bonus ahead of Celestial or Padded and +5 DEX bonus ahead of a Mithril Chain Shirt (in fact, your AC drops when you put on the Mithril Chain Shirt, unless it's magical). Make friends with a wizard and buy a Pearl of Power 3, then beg for Greater Mage Armor. |

Padded is the best from the PHB, but is there some other made of wierd and wonderful materials, enchantments, etc? Well, if it has to be armour and not bracers of armour, then you're looking at either: thistledown padded armour from RotW. +1 armour bonus and +10 max Dex bonus. 0 ACP, 0% spell failure. or if you don't mind something more exotic, there's gnome twist cloth from RoS. +1 armour bonus and no max Dex bonus. 0 ACP but 5% spell failure. the upside to this stuff is if you take the exotic armour feat for it, the armour and its enhancement bonuses count for touch attacks against you. If you take an elf character with a 20 starting DEX; bump it to 23 at levels 4, 8 and 12; give the PC Gloves of Dex +6; and take Wildrunner for a Primal Scream +6 to DEX--you can get the PC's Dex up to 35, or +12. Or dump the gloves and get a friendly cleric to cast Divine Agility for +10 enhancement to Dex for a 39 (+14). Get a mage to cast Reduce Person on you for a +2 size bonus to Dex for a 41 (+15). And if you can get your hands on a +1 inherent bonus somehow (they have been given out in various mods in various regions I've been told) you can get that up to a 42 (+16). I have access and could afford it, but I'm not keen on the armor check penalty of -2 ... That's what the 2nd level of Nightsong Enforcer is for. |
| clannagh01-07-07, 05:40 PM | if mithral chain doesnt do it for you magic is good .. a wizzie in trog form with greater mage armor and shield with a barkskin and shield of faith from high level friends can get impressive AC also remember that ioun stones defection rings bucklers shields rings of force and natural armor rings all have no dex penalty |
| _m_01-07-07, 10:55 PM | trog poly is ez way to pump armour. and you shouldn't need the pearl of power 3 in most cases. my wizzy will quite hapily dispense a high dex toon an extended greater mage armour if they just tell me to charge one in advance. |
| Maesto01-08-07, 11:20 PM | You can actually get 11 from +3 dex and +8 mithril fullplate, which is very nice for clerics (or barbarians... or fighters... or...). However, you're all missing the best armour available - sure it's exotic, but it's awesome (at least I think so). Go for the RoS "Gnome Twistcloth". No max dex, and any armour bonuses go straight to touch AC. Pity you can't guarantee access, although I have seen it three times on ARs (twice was for interactives). Cheers, J |
| haferka01-09-07, 12:48 AM | I believe there is a feat in PH2 that shifts your Rage Str bonus to Dex. |
| Lomiat01-10-07, 10:26 PM | Well, if it has to be armour and not bracers of armour, then you're looking at either: thistledown padded armour from RotW. +1 armour bonus and +10 max Dex bonus. 0 ACP, 0% spell failure. Oooh! I'm glad you posted. I have access to that with my Wiz who has Craft Magic Arms and Armor and access to Deathward armor, and I've just never bothered to look up thistledown... *Lightbulb* |
| LachlarlanIII01-11-07, 09:54 PM | I'm surprised no one has mentioned Celestial Armor. +3 Chainmail with a +8 max Dex bonus. You can get 16 AC wearing that stuff. Per the DMG, it costs ~22k gp. And you can craft it as early as 7th without access. |
| Arvagor01-11-07, 10:03 PM | I'm surprised no one has mentioned Celestial Armor.What am I? Chopped liver??? :uh-huh: |
| _m_01-11-07, 10:11 PM | What am I? Chopped liver??? :uh-huh: i thought you were steak and kidney actually... though i could be wrong. *hug for arv* |
