How much for that camel? (Bright Sands) [Archive] - Wizards Community

In our Bright Sands campaign arc at home a question has risen nearly every session, are camels available for purchase in LG? In the Blight on Brightsands documentation it seems that mounts are not purchasable. I can think of a few reasons for them not to be.

The Bright Sands, being made by a magical catastrophe, camels not being native to the desert and no one has been crazy enough to create them by magical means, import them from somewhere that does have camels, or allow them to come in hanging on to any driftwood.

Perhaps it might be to keep the rest of the campaign relatively intact and that the designers feel that camels turning up in odd areas such as frozen wastes would spoil the feel of that area.

However, that said I cannot find explict rules allowing the purchase of mounts from the players handbook (Erm they do come under the heading of mounts there don't they? Flame me if they don't :D ) Also the purchasing of equipment in the Bright Sands Source book does specify the equipment available for starting characters.

Thoughts and feedback pls, and if someone can point me to the rules on purchasing mounts I would be grateful, or direct me to anything addressing the camel issue.

I'd link to the WotC thread directly, but the article seems to have moved when the boards were restructured...

Thanks Arvagor, actually found the info out from a Dungeon article not two hours ago. No camels in the Bright Sands, there goes my dreams of saying "I give you three camels for wife." etc.

... actually found the info out from a Dungeon article not two hours ago. No camels in the Bright Sands ... Icefyre, which Dungeon issue is it? I think it is Denizens of the Bright Desert article, which I have. But I don't remember which issue it is. I am thinking it is Dungeon 103.

But, Bright Sands characters cannot buy a camel, according to the Blight on Bright Sands Sourcebook. Page 4 indicates that starting characters can buy from several of Sandstorm's equipment tables, and then specifically excludes Table 4-4: Mounts.

And, I don't think characters in LG can buy a camel in general because they are not among the items available to PCs according to chapters 3 and 4 of the LGCS. I think you actually need "access" to camels.

Dungeon #103 indeed details the most powerful (or colorful) NPC living in the Bright Desert, but what you want is Dungeon #98 because that's the one dealing with the BD's ecosystem.

What makes for an interesting wrench to be thrown into all this, is the fact that druids from anywhere outside the Bright Lands can still call camels as an animal companion -- go figure! So while you can't buy that camel, take a level of druid and play a mod outside the desert, call the camel before that mod, then keep him! ;)

A druid has always been able call a camel as an animal companion. Camel salesman aren't common enough for LG character to buy a camel without access. Seems resonable. There is AR access for Tusmit Warcamels outside of Tusmit.
