Ok...my druid has access to one of these in the items found box of one of his older AR's. The specific one found was a +1 Necklace of 3 natural weapons, for 6200gp. What I want to know is:

1) Assuming I meet the pre-reqs (Craft wondrous+Craft A&A), what kind of necklace can I craft? Could I make a +1 necklace of one natural weapon, or would it have to be 3 like the one I found? This is the question I am most unsure of.

2) Would I later be able to upgrade it to +2/+3/etc... or would +1 be the highest I can go because that's all I found? I think because the LGCS says that +1-+5 weapon upgrades are open access and that the necklace counts as a weapon for upgrade purposes that I can.

3) The item's description in savage species states it can be upgraded as a normal weapon, except the cost is multiplied by the number of weapons the necklace affects. Can I add weapon special abilities through normal CMA&A use or purchasing, or would I need to find specific other necklaces with that ability to be able to add them? Again, due to access rules I think as long as I've seen a weapon with the appropriate ability in the items found box and meet the prerequisites that I can craft the upgrades, or use favors to have upgrades added to it.

1. You have to start with the 3 weapon version at +1, just like finding a burst weapon you have to make the whole thing unless you've found the smaller enchantment on its own at some point. Of course at 3 weapons and +1 you're paying more for a more limited vesion of an amulet of mighty fists (which is open of course).

2&3. Both of these are a little more iffy. If the necklace says it can be upgraded just like a weapon (or 3), then I'd be inclined to say weapon upgrading rules apply. The thing is rules like this* were introduced later in 3.0 and simply haven't resurfaced again in 3.5 that I've seen.

*Weapon and Armor upgrades being applied to non-weapon and armor types, like bracers of armor being able to accept armor upgrades other than just enhancement bonuses.

I suppose the answer to number one falls under:

For enhancements with options, such as bane weapons, you gain access to only the specific options you find in an adventure.

Given that my preferred animal companion is a rhino with a single natural weapon, taking CMA&A and crafting the 3 natural weapon version seems like a waste...

If it's a Rhino, just use Greater Magic Fang on it. Works great.

Yeah, but GMF can't make his horn Holy.

There was an old thread about upgrading bracers with armor enhancements, which might be pertinent to questions (2) and (3). Here's the link to Britt's post on the topic:

Well the rules for the necklace being upgraded as a weapon are contained in the item description itself, so access to the item is also access to the rules for upgrading it. So that clears up questions 2+3...I can add whatever I have access to by crafting...it just leaves question 1 kind of fuzzy because there's not really any comparable item examples to answer it with, but it seems likely I'd be stuck making the 3 weapon version...though I suppose I could just change to a different animal companion with that many natural weapons...Or hope I get access to align fang....
