hehe .. do not feed the trolls ??????????????????

It supposedly works because it is spiked all along its length whereas normal reach weapons only have the sharp bit at the end.

However in reality any large creature threatens adjoining squares and those further out so its not actually unique.

I wasn't trolling, I am honestly interested. I'd like to take a reach weapon that isn't spiked chain but I don't want to just have the bad guys step inside my radius. Spiked Chain is the only one then? Isn't there a feat (Short haft?) that allows you to attack adjacent squares? Worth it?

ok first thing i would say is that my level 7 chain fighter virtually never needs to hit anything adjacent to him they never get close

but regardless of that if you wear spiked gauntlets with a normal reach weapon you still threaten both anyway (though no other reach weapon is also finessable, DH power attackable and useful for both disarms and trips )

Personally i like spiked chains because it is for me a sign that you are actually playing real D&D and not some medieval historical role play where we are pretending to be using historical weapons (that most of us in real life could barely lift) .. but hey thats just me, everyone is entitled to their own style of play

Not every GM will allow that. If you've got two hands on your reach weapon, then those hands aren't threatening the adjacent squares (just like a spiked gauntleted hand holding a shield doesn't threaten)...

very true

but that doesnt stop you from smacking him with your reach weapon as an AoO as he steps in during his turn, taking one hand off the reach weapon in your own turn and whacking him with the gauntlet followed by a 5' step back and grabbing the weapon again (very tough DM that would claim putting a hand back on a weapon you are holding is not a free action)

Personally I think that is a contradictory unusual statement.

You argue: Because this weapon is better than all others statistically - it is more 'DnDish?

It actually IS a roleplay - and lots of people like the medieval period (lots of similarities both mythologically as well as 'world' wise to a medieval setting.

I mean look at the Ratik Region - it is a feudal society with fiefs and lords, and is set in a very medieval setting.

So is Ratik not real DnD?

I just don't understand your comment at all, it appears to be bitter and anti 'non optimised' characters asking for some more balance, by telling them to use a spiked chain. Whilst I agree that the game doesn't necessarily have to be 100% balanced but in a ROLEPLAY game your choice of A chain with spikes on it shouldn't be mechanically THAT much better than any other choice.

Unless you just want to get rid of table variation. Everyone must use Spiked chains to be real DnD.

Sorry but I really don't get that statement at all.

I can't think of any other weapons which threaten 5' and 10' all the time, but the longaxe (CV) can be used as either a normal or a reach weapon, depending on how you choose to use it.

IF you Power Attack for at least 3 points with the longaxe, you may treat it as a reach weapon for the remainder of your turn. Otherwise, it acts like a normal greataxe. As an added benefit, Weapon Focus and Specialization with the greataxe may alsob e applied to the longaxe. Overall, kind of nifty.

You can also use the Short Haft feat to turn a reach weapon in to a normal weapon, though again you still don't treat the weapon as both a normal and a reach weapon at the same time (unless I'm mistaken; I didn't actually take the time to look that one up).

Whether spike chains are good stylistically we always be a debate but, they become the best choice with those who can devote the feats. Requiring an exotic weapon feat is a pretty big deal for many characters but, for a fighter or those with many feats, spending the feat as well as those needed to optimize it is well worth the expenditure. It might well be the reason to take fighter levels that many feel there is not a payoff for.

Even though my primary character wields one, I wish I had a good reason to to use other weapons. Admittedly, I keep building into the choice but, I also pick-up other weapon styles and configurations and still my best choice in most circumstances is to work the chain. I have an Adamantium longspear I'd prefer to use stylistically but, it usually stays on my back.

I'd argue that all those DMs ruling against Spiked Gauntlet being able to provide an inside answer when wielding a reach weapon have compounded the problem. Maybe the rules allow it and maybe they don't but, either way it makes spiked chain that much better of a choice. Reach is really good in 3.5.
That's why so many people wield spiked chain and are enlarge-junkies. Anyway they can provide viable options to spiked chain will only make the game more varied.

Never even heard of a duom!

Well, lets say you were an enlarged dwarven defender and were thus immobile. You would then threaten 15', right? Since I'm immobile, any enemy stepping inside my reach would not only avoid the extra AOOs, but would also be safe from me 5' stepping back into range because I wouldn't be allowed to alter my defensive stance. I'm just trying to come up with a weapon that is interesting, but takes full advantage of that situation. I like the Long Axe idea, maybe in conjunction with the spiked gauntlets idea.

Sword and Fist 3.0
iirc Arms and Equipment Guide (also 3.0)
May have been reprinted for 3.5 in a Dragon Magazine somewhere.

TC used the wrong word and it changed the entire meaning of his question.

TC meant to say, "Is spiked chain", not "I spiked chain"

The doum is the only other one I can think of, but it's in the Arms and Equipment Guide, so you may never get access to one.

Right, valid source, but not very commonly used...and for good reason, not only is an out of date source, but the old 3.0 weapon size system could cause some confusion if used in 3.5.

There are others out there in WotC material, but none of it that I can think of that are legal sources (i.e. OA had a couple).

One single weapon? Not too many of them show up, certainly.

But that's what Armor Spikes are for.

No changing weapons or moving your hands around.

You stab with the reach weapon at 10' and slam with the Armor Spikes at 5'. The only down side is that the Spiked Armor is considered a Light Weapon and thusly does not gain the benefit of Power Attack. You don't suffer Two Weapon Fighting penalties unless you opt to gain an extra attack during your Full Attack action, so you can safely use any weapon in any giving Attack of Opportunity situation too.

It makes for plenty of fun with a Spiked Armor, Buckler, Improved Buckler Defense, and a Glaive on a Knight with Bulwark of Defense. A 5-square by 5-square block where enemies can no longer 5' step, move at half-speed, and are constantly provoking Attacks of Opportunity is just classy. :)

A whip dagger has 15' reach and threatens adjacent. However, it also provokes attacks of opportunity.

Whip daggers are weird. I use one in a home campaign which follows LG rules (as we're all primarily LG players) but we aren't really sure how to work it.

We had the fantastic realisation recently that you can use a whip to disarm while standing behind an ally. You don't provoke (you're using a weapon and you have cover) and as you are making opposed attack rolls, rather than aiming to hit an Armour Class, the +4 AC bonus that the defender would have if you attacked doesn't make a difference. You can even wield the whip two-handed to get a +4 to your roll.

Now something tells me that somewhere along that line we missed a rule, and I'd not mind finding it out but if we didn't - it seems like a very effective method.

Since the "Sage" (and they really couldn't have given him a much less appropriate title) put that entry in the FAQ recommending it you will find that a lot of GMs require a move action to put the second hand on a weapon.

I was fortunate enough to have Andy as a GM for an Urnst game at a fiesta slot and one of the comments he did make is he rarely plays LG which might explain why some of his rulings don't seem that compatible with LGCS.

Even if its a move action to put a hand back on the weapon .. its a free action to let go with both hands and drop a weapon which surely makes it a free action to let go with one hand and keep hold with the other - half a free action should still be a free action :)

It's the fact that his rulings aren't compatable with teh PHB/DMG that bothers me ..and when they just don't make sense (but that's a matter of opinion). If you see him again send him to Infinite Monkeys (you don't have to read whole threads)

[Indeed. I don't think anyone has claimed it would not be free to let go with one hand]

I think he is from Seattle ( which might explain a lot :) ) so is unlikely to be back in Australia in the near future.

Well if letting go is a free action there is some benefit to gauntlets such as hit BBG at 10' at full BAB then let go as free and hit lil guy next you with iterative , though armor spikes may work out better (never quite understood how you attack with them outside grappling) and spiked chain better still.

Overall i prefer weird weapons like spike chains because I have an offbeat "Terry Pratchet Discworld" vision of the game but I can see how a combination of medieval weapons like a Guisarme or Glaive with a spiked gauntlet would appeal to some people and it is an equally valid approach.

thats a feat from Complete Warrior Improved Weapon Familiarity which gives you all racial weapons as martial .. you need to take it as a feat

some weapons llike dwarven waraxes for dwarves are racial but not all

Think spiked elbow and knee pads along side your general chest spikes for grappling.

LOL

I almost hate this kind of info..... I have been thinking about a disarm guy for awhile. But I don't like spiked chains, now i hear that a Duom is a great weapon and available!!

So that leaves me with roughly 25 or so mods to worry about.

Is it this one or that one, should i use this character or a different Character..... ohh the headaches

Sounds correct to me. The only thing I'd add is a True Strike for a +20. Whip disarms are a nice contribution for a Wiz / Sor / Warmage in the baby levels.

You know what I'd like?

A Chain.

Not a Spiked Chain, a heavy chain without any spikey bits.

I just feel like hitting an opponent with a length of chain, possibly with weighted ends to make swinging it easier. Like a bicycle chain with padlocks on both ends

It would have the same stats as a Spiked Chain but do Bludgeoning damage instead.

Is there such an LG-legal thing?

Havent seen one.

My chain GISH does have current AR access to a 5' reach non-spiked chain that lets you grapple without entering the opponents square though :)

Savage Species has the Chain Lash. 1d6 instead of 2d4, so the damage total isn't as good, but bludgeoning is better than piercing for many things. (DR/bludgeoning is more common, piercing can't be used to sunder, etc.)

It also has the ability to be used as either a reach weapon or a double weapon. It also has all the other benefits of the spiked chain; can be used to trip, +2 to disarm, can be finessed.

Savage Species came out roughly the same time as the Arms and Equipment guide, so it's in the same "3.25" limbo. It's still a legal source for LG, but it's pretty rare.
