| happosaai06-23-07, 11:22 AM | make an opponent lose thier DEX bonus when making a ranged weapon attack? Other than sniping per the Hide skill in the PHB, or the Deadeye Shot feat from the PHB2, do archers have any other way to consistantly get the sneak attack/Skimish bonus as a Rogue or Scout? Edit: I did find the option with the bluff skill in the PHB now also to "feint in combat". |

Edit: I did find the option with the bluff skill in the PHB now also to "feint in combat". Skirmish is independent of whether they lose their DEX or not. Movement is the sole determinant of whether it applies. Sneak attack requires that they lose thier DEX. Feint only works in melee combat, it doesn't work for ranged. Ed |
| kjenks06-23-07, 11:42 AM | Swift action: Swift Invisibility Distract Assailant Standard action: Grease Invisibility spells (Greater, regular, Superior, etc.) Phantom Threat (in conjunction with the immediate spell Arrow Mind) Bluff/Feint doesn't work with a ranged attack. (It did in 3e; it changed in 3.5e.) |
| happosaai06-23-07, 12:04 PM | Ahh ok, so it only works if spells are involved :( Or movement with Skirmish. Hmmm no way to setup flanking bonuses while making ranged attacks either... or if there is I missed the rule? Shucks... looks like I might need to make some changes to what I was thinking about doing - making a ranged sneak attack specialist Rogue x/Ranger 2/PrC ?... not sure what PrC to add in though. |
| kenobi6506-23-07, 12:06 PM | Hmmm no way to setup flanking bonuses while making ranged attacks either... or if there is I missed the rule? Nope...you can't get flanking while using a ranged weapon. |
| smerwin2906-24-07, 09:18 AM | Master Thrower PrC from Complete Warrior has the sneaky shot option. |
| haferka06-24-07, 09:37 AM | Doesnt one of the elf racial substitutions allow flanking with ranged weapons? |
| Banor06-24-07, 06:23 PM | no that the ranger without animal companion alternate class feature that make people that are getting hit by your arrows considered as flanked by your for the purpose of allies attacking it, so you cant even get that to sneak. PHBII p 55 |
| clannagh06-25-07, 03:18 AM | if you are a mage type ... ice knife from spell compendium drains dex (ranged touch that drains dex on a failed save) but they do not lose it in a way that makes them sneakable Always remember that a enemy that is climbing or balancing is sneakable. Subject to table variation this could mean throwing a bag of marbles or a flask of slippery oil MAY make the enemy sneakable ....... depends on the GM. |
| Cardinal Teplin06-25-07, 07:55 AM | Shoot at them at the start of combat, before they have acted. They are flatfooted and thus denied dex bonus and thus sneakable. It's an obvious one, but noone had mentioned it... |
| happosaai06-25-07, 11:20 AM | Hehe good ideas! Thanks guys, i'll have to check the racial sub info and the alt class info also. |
| Some_call_me_Tim06-25-07, 05:42 PM | Here's the list I came up with for another thread about what makes you lose your dexterity bonus: flat-footed invisible attacker successful feint opponent blinded opponent grappling opponent stunned opponent cowering opponent helpless opponent pinned opponent climbing Through an odd quirk in the rules, balancing makes you "flat-footed" rather than "denied a Dexterity bonus to AC" which means uncanny dodge can apply, but normally balancing makes you vulnerable as well. Most of these methods require spell casting, expendable magic items, or another player willing to let you shoot into grapple. The hide/snipe method is probably the most reliable if you don't have access to any others. |
| Howie2306-25-07, 05:48 PM | make an opponent lose thier DEX bonus when making a ranged weapon attack? The race Neraphim has an ability that makes an opp lose Dex. There is also a feat Neraph Throw that does the same. Both are in Planar Handbook, and needless to say, are not Open in LG. David |
