Do mundane animals like guard dogs get xp? I was wondering cuz I had a pc level up yesterday to level 2 and he's had his guard dog from mod 1. Does the dog ever get any tougher. I think that mundane animals should. I mean, do fighters always just have regular old warhorses? What is the circles ruling on this.

the warhorses tend to get younger and younger - they are replaced with fresh ones every module - as past APL 4 without the proper feats/skills/(prestige)-classes, the normal animals are converted to burgers (ready grilled) by any fireball. heavy warhorses tend to need at least one well rolled fireeball or two average ones, they have so damned many hit points :D

if you can't get access to some special critter or templated animal, just dismount prior to combat ;).

The problem is that animals don't gain XP (in LG or otherwise). "Advancing" an animal makes a bigger, tougher one, and you could argue that that happens, in part, due to their "experiences"...but there's no particular mechanism for having that happen.

The short answer is: there's no way in the LG rules to advance a mundane animal.

Mundane animals, like riding dogs, can be really beneficial at low levels, but once you APL 4 (or certainly APL 6) they're just speed bumps. Your player should just let his dog retire and guard the house, because sooner or later it's gonna wind up monster chow.

I had my Guard Dog 'level' into a Riding Dog - on the ARs it's bought/sold, in character it grew up.
