Like many of you, I'm going through the document to figure out what changed. Here's what changed in the Closed Prestige Classes access rules.

This section combines the 596 NPC Only and Restricted sections. It adds the following prestige classes to the Closed list:
Abjurant Champion (CM)
Magical Trickster (CS)
Malconvoker (CS)
Master of Many Forms (CAd)
Master Specialist (CM)
Ultimate Magus (CM)

Assassin and Blackguard have been deleted from the Closed list.

I want my Abjurant Champion!

(I looked up "Abjurant" in the dictionary, and the definition was "Bah-roken.")

Don't forget the second definition of "Ambiguous" and the third definition of "Contradictory".

Could someone please explain why master specialist is closed. I think it is a great bone to throw at peolewh ochoose to specialize. and dont see whats so broken about it.

Planar binding.

Yay for concrete and simple answers!

Planar binding.

Bleah!
Is that all?
Big deal! I'll waste the class feature!

Believe me, I like the class and I think others did as well. I was disappointed when I saw the planar binding stuff in it :(

Indeed.
I just wouldn't care if the class abilities for one-third of the class were Closed or useless because of things being Closed. No exemptions or replacements would be needed.
Just so I could summon a fiendish scorpion (or thousand) without MWAO being able to stop me!

I think you're forgetting you live in Keoland...

You can summon a fiendish creature in Keoland without it being an Evil act. That doesn't stop a Dreadwalker from reporting you to the authorities. ;)

The Esoterica aren't really balanced against each other very well. In particular, Master Specialists of Conjuration essentially get Sudden Quicken 3/day from 10th level where Transmutation gets to do damage equal to the level of the spell if the target saves 3/day!"

"Look, I still did 3 hp of damage with my Slow spell!"

I'm curious as to why Ultimate Magus is closed, when it's power level is comparible to the Arcane Heirophant which is not.

I don't think you're right about that.
I suspect you don't appreciate the power of the UM

You can get a Wizard with only 1 spell level dropped who has a whole bunch of Sorceror slots and can use them to get 'free' Metamagic (simply take Practiced Spellcaster Sorceror). I haven't really gone into it but it looks pretty hideous to me.

I'd suspect it has something to do with the weird interaction between Practiced Spellcaster on the minor class and it. A Wizard 4/Sorcerer 1 with Practiced Spellcaster for Sorcerer.

I would expect ultimate magus is out for the same reason DMM is:
the metamagic bump interaction.
