I don't really think there's an arguement for keeping Marshal, and it's from a pretty wonky book. Why can't you just yank it out and let people with it rebuild?
Britt

02-09-07, 04:31 PM
Because yanking it would cause a lot of trouble, such that it would require a rebuild. We don't want to rebuild if we don't have to. The polymorph changes required a rebuild and were pretty much required to bring us in line with the Core rules. Trust me, I would love to get rid of Marshal, but it's not feasible now.

Whats wrong with the marshals?

Usually comes down to Motivate Dex and Motivate Charisma.

My Marshals have neither.

How about they start writing more marshals as bad guys. I'm sure in a year or two we'll have a marshal witch-hunt on our hands.

Bring it on I say. I'm not afraid of enemies that go faster than I do.

Hell, they usually go before me as it is and I haven't had too much trouble dealing with them.

My MArshal/Bard is a singing cowboy with a winchester repeating rifle (heavy repeating crossbow). He's fun, although in combat, his cohort is so much more effective (a druid), especially with bardsong up (since the summoned critters are generally too dumb to get the auras).

What about the 2 marshal/fighter spiked chain users that trip everyone in the party after chugging potions of enlarge person? Oh yeah, they stack those auras.

Marshall's may get those Minor Aura's, but I have a full fledged Marshall, and it is near impossible for me to get anything done other than help. It's still a secondary character. Worse off than a bard IMHO. You don't get spells, and the bard can apply their inspire to all attack rolls and damage rolls, not just specific ones. You want to nuke a Mashall? Put a silence spell on it. Marshall's are way under powered compared to the other core classes. The only thing a Marshall truly excells at without trying is Diplomacy, and that can get down right ridiculous. Take my Marshall for example. I made her to be a Diplomat freak and that is what she is with here +33 Diplomacy at 5th Level, and to think it could be even higher if I had a different feat at first level. But that is all she is really good for, and I have yet to play at a table where the DM allowed me to use Diplomacy to end combat before it began. So I haven't had that benefit yet either. And a Bard can do just as well with Diplomacy and gets other helpful abilities as well.

Why again do you want to ban Marshall's? Because so many people have a level of it in their mutt build? That's like saying we should ban Barbarians, because so many fighter types take it at first level for the hit points.

Easily rectified by keeping one's distance. If I move 60' cause I'm hasted and you move 60' in a double move, there's no way you can trip me.

Either that, or you have the mage cast grease on their weapons. Or blind them, or entangle them. See, everything has a counter.

Hope they are monks then, cause by the new rules only weapons, cloaks, and amulets resize, so they'll be naked...and they lose 1 AOO per round from the -2 dex. Probably have too much MAD to be good at anything...

Your Marshal isn't lacking in combat because she's a Marshal, she's lacking in combat because you wanted her to be +33 to diplomacy at level 5.

And how is that different than the Raging Spiked chain using Centar with Improved trip and combat reflexes

Plus can always just cast silence and BAM! no more auras. And then the fighter has to put points in CHA, meaning less in Str, Dex, Con, or a lower will save.

Can we NOT discuss Marshal right now, please, since nothing is being changed in the LGCS? I have enough threads to keep up on without threads talking about why or why not something that shouldn't happen should or should not happen :)

No, because the spell enlarge person explicitly states that your equipment resizes...

And the LGCS draft explicity states that equipment does not resize, and makes no exception for enlarge person.

Perhaps, but we are only talking about two feats, and it isn't that the ability scores are out of whack. Str 14, Dex 12 Con 12, so she can fight, but I don't have full base attack bonus, and no extra attack benefits unless you specifically take a feat.

02-09-07, 06:24 PM
Marshal seems to be a fine class until you begin to mix it with other classes. A level or two can have a pretty big pay off and begin to lead to some very powergamey builds.

I have a straight 3rd level marshal that's fun to play and helps our all elven party play like elves should but, I have heard of some combos that seem pretty abusive.
Britt

02-09-07, 06:26 PM
Seriously, please, no more talk on stuff that doesn't matter for the LGCS. Talk about this in the Characters forum, which I'm not reading right now and where it actually belongs.
